this is the way that Latino-rights groups want it. It is a FACT that the majority of illegal aliens are Hispanic so they use this issue to divert fair-minded Americans from the indefensible actions of foreign nationals and get them to follow the red-herring of a poor, oppressed, little hispanic gardener just trying...(sniff)...trying to feed his...(sob,sniff, sniff)...five little starving nino's and...(sniff, sob)...his poor, blind mama... it's a ploy, and it works pretty well because we Americans are pretty genererous and we value fair play...

It's the Christian sense of exceptionalism that grates. Anytime you have a group of people saying that they're right (and "good") because they BELIEVE something, and you are wrong (and "bad") because you DON'T believe it...well...resentment and anger will follow smug superiority every time. When Christians set themselves up on a pedastel as "better" or "more moral", don't be surprised when people gleefully point out every flaw and imperfection in that characterization.

In Rwanda and Darfur women and girls are routinely raped as an act of war. In most of the muslim world women are second class citizens who are considered the property and responsibility of their male relatives. In Saudi Arabia a young woman was just sentanced to prison and whipping for having the gall to be gang raped. In northern Iraq a young girl was beaten to death by a mob of men for declairing that she wanted to marry the boy that SHE loved. In Columbia females accused of crimes are often housed in the same cell as male criminals...often beaten, raped, and forced to "serve" in return for food. In Europe and America women still hold few positions of authority and earn only a fraction of what comparable males earn. Medical research is skewed toward male physiology, more R&D money

I find that I have a difficult time accepting a compliment. I've never been taught how to do so. We've been taught how to accept criticism and use it to improve ourselves but not how to take credit or compliments gracefully. When someone compliments me I feel embarrassed, as if I need to brush it off lest I look as if I were boasting or vain. I might indeed BE the most beautiful woman you've ever seen, or the most intelligent person you've ever met, but for me to acknowlege this just seems...self-congradulatory. Even worse, I feel as though I should reciprocate by complimenting the complimentor! The whole situation ends up being painful and embarrassing. Even though I still feel uncomfortable with compliments, a simple "Thank you." seems to be about right, if a bit stilted.

You are a guy. Maybe you should listen to your fellow men sometimes. Which is more common..."I'd jump on that!" or "I bet she's really sweet"? "Look at the *** on THAT girl" or "That sweater looks nice on her"? Which would most guys go to first, a strip club or a coffee shop? Hooters or Buffalo's? If you had both magazines on the coffee table which one would most guys pick up first: Playboy or Rolling Stone? See? Most guys ARE fixated on sex and women's bodies. As the old saying goes, "guys use love to get sex and women use sex to get love."

I don't listen to the genre very much so I'm not an authority, but you might consider this point...if you believe in something (as you seem to believe in hip-hop being benign), then you shouldn't NEED to have someone else tell you why. Ask yourself why YOU view hip-hop as something positive, and then tell others. but to help you out...at the very least you can say that it is a valid form of social commentary. Or you could point to those artists who DO have positive imagery in their rhymes...

rich people can afford to tip better so service workers try to be attentive in anticipation of a fat extra. They rent the suites, order room service, use the overpriced mini-bars, so hoteliers fawn over them. Rich people can afford to pay high prices for luxery items so shop keepers try to be attentive in anticipation of a big sale. The same goes for eating establishments, hotels, etc. They get better treatment by the police because they can afford the best lawyers who'll sue at the drop of a hat for any perceived slight. They get better treatment at colleges and hospitals because they can afford big endowments. Basically, they get better treatment because they can afford to pay for it.

but it's not YOUR home. America welcomes more LEGAL immigrants and permanent residents than any other nation on earth. Regardless of your ethnicity or culture, if you follow the law and obey the rules you won't have to worry about being asked to leave, or being forcibly expelled. Far too many Mexicans believe that they have some kind of right to be in OUR country, taking resources from OUR children and communities, stealing OUR birthright. They act as if they DESERVE to take what our fathers have built. They act as if WE have no right to say who lives among us. Personally, I prefer to live among people who value honesty, decency, respect for the law, cleanliness, and the rights of others. If you are in this country illegally, you obviously don't hold to these American values.

in reply to: White females considered the most desired? #21832

Historically whites have been the ruling class. To gain the affection of a white woman would often raise the social standing of the ethnic male, the idea being that there must be something extraordinary about him that would attract and hold a high-status female. White women, as often as not, have been desired for what we represent as much as our appearance. of course I could be wrong and it *could* be that men just like the way white women look. There have been studies to classify the traits that contribute to being considered "attractive". Almost universally, men chose traits that could be considered "child-like". Large eyes, small noses, pink bow-like lips, etc. These physical traits tend to show up more often in caucasions than other groups.

Brazilians speak Portugese because it was explorers from that country who conquered and colonized the native population in that South American region. Brazil's population is so diverse because of the historical colonization by Europeans, the importation of African slaves, and finally in the late 1800s, an influx (by invitation) of immigrants from Western Europe. All these folks intermarried within the ethnic groups, including the indigenous peoples to produce the 'Brazilian'.

in reply to: what’s wrong with “ma’am”? #30421

There are two possibilities. 1) Ma'am is the contraction of 'madam'. The modern meaning of Madam isn't something a lot of women like to be called. 2) That even though you mean it as a term of respect, it also indicated a certain...maturity...in a woman. Historically, women have been valued for their youth and beauty, NOT for their maturity. (that's why it's considered impolite to ask a woman her age) Calling a woman 'ma'am' is like calling her an old lady.

my hair is long and finely textured. It is very soft and it feels like silk between my fingers. I touch my hair, or 'carress it' if you like, because it feels nice...not because I think I'm cute.

your God is all knowing and all powerful? Then how could he not KNOW that this certain person or that particular person is NOT going to love him? Regardless of the red herring of 'free will', if your God does know all that is, was, or ever shall be...allowing this being to be ensouled even though He KNOWS they will ultimately end up burning in Hell for eternity is plain sadistic and evil. Do you worship a cruel and sadistic god that creates beings KNOWING that ultimately they will be tortured for eternity?

it's a stereo-typical holdover from the old days when it wasn't considered 'lady-like' to do anything better than a man. Plus, it was considered emasculating for a man to 'allow' a lady to drive him around so women simply didn't drive as often as men, hence didn't have the experience to do as well. And women were considered *REALLY* bad with anything mechanical. All these factored into turning a lack of practical experience into a misogynistic stereotype that women just can't drive.

The language spoken in the Philippines is Pilipino (note the absence of the h). The people are Filipinos (men) and Filipinas, also without the h. My first guide on the spelling of any word is Webster's New World College Dictionary Fourth Edition. The dictionary doesn't give a derivation for this noun, but the second definition of Filipino is 'var. of Pilipino.' So you could make the argument that it should be spelled with a P, but apparently the F has become popular over time.
