Why does "Filipino" start with an "F" while "Philippines" starts with a "Ph"?

Hi Jason, You must remember that the Philippines (named after King Philip (Rey Felipe) of Spain) was under the control of Spain for more than 400 years. Hence, that explains the extensive Spanish influence on the country by way of customs, clothing, language, spelling, words, and even names of the natives. So to answer your question, Philippines is the English word for Filipinas-(Spanish then), (now changed to Pilipinas-(Tagalog)). This applies also to the word Filipino. I hope this helps to enlighten you. Wally

Because the country is officially Filipinas, after the Spanish who 'discovered' it in 1521 named it after Felipe, el Rey (King Philip)

Because that's the proper spelling in the country's language. Phillipines is an Americanized spelling.

The language spoken in the Philippines is Pilipino (note the absence of the h). The people are Filipinos (men) and Filipinas, also without the h. My first guide on the spelling of any word is Webster's New World College Dictionary Fourth Edition. The dictionary doesn't give a derivation for this noun, but the second definition of Filipino is 'var. of Pilipino.' So you could make the argument that it should be spelled with a P, but apparently the F has become popular over time.

'Philippines' is anglicised while 'Filipino' is probably in Spanish (Spain colonised the Philippines). Really its all a question of language.
