AnaParticipantI have had this problem for a while and it is to define what Brazilians are. They speak Portuguese, they are from South America, and they have as many, or more, racial backgrounds as the US.

Ann L. LowensteinParticipantUmmmm… I’m going to take a wild stab here… People from Brazil? Could you POSSIBLY be more ignorant? (The sad part is your claim to have had more than four years of college…).

John S.ParticipantBrazil, much like the United States, is a melting pot. There are many racial and ethnic groups represented in its population. Your question is akin to someone asking, ‘What is an American?’ There just isn’t a single answer. Now, with regard to race, there are four major racial groups: (1) Mongoloid, (2) Negroid, (3) Caucasoid, and (4) Aboriginoid. The Mongoloid group comprises people from the Orient, Pacific islanders, and Native Americans. The Negroid group is composed of black Africans. The Caucasoid group is composed of white Europeans, Middle Easterners, and people from the Indian subcontinent. The Aboriginoid group is made up of the native Aborigines of Australia. There has been a great deal of migration and mixing through the ages. You can easily find pockets of people of a particular racial group in places other than those where their ancestors are from. You can also easily locate groups of people who are the result of racial mixing. For instance, many Hispanics are known as ‘mestizos,’ or mixed race. This is because they are a mixture of white Spanish settlers (Caucasoids) and local Native American peoples (Mongoloids).

Teresa28818ParticipantBrazilians are Brazilians. And if people ask about the people’s race, say ‘all of them.’

LaurieParticipantThey come from Brazil, which is a country in South America. They speak Portuguese rather than Spanish because when Spain and Portugal were ‘dividing up’ South America several centuries ago, Portugal got the section that became Brazil. The native people, Africans brought as slaves, and European colonists intermarried, or didn’t; and that makes Brazilians.

Mr. BennetParticipantBrazilians are born in Brazil, South America. We are product of Portuguese, indians and African slaves. That’s where our racial background comes from. We also had many Italian, Japanese, Dutchmen and German immigrants. You can find Italian descendants everywhere in the southeast, Dutchmen in the northeast, German in the south and Japanese in the state of Sao Paulo. As African, Causasian and Indians mixed, the Brazilian people was born, bearing cultural aspects from all of them, into religion, into the kitchen, for example.

Shella28775ParticipantWhen The Age of Exploration started to really get going, the Spanish and the Portugese divided up the world. One of the dividing lines went through the eastern side of South America. The part on the eastern side is Brazil and was in the part of the world that Portugal got in the agreement. So the Portugese claimed Brazil and the Spanish claimed the rest of South America. Most Brazilians are a combination of the original Portugese explorers/settlers and the indigenous people of the area.

MaraParticipantBrazilians speak Portugese because it was explorers from that country who conquered and colonized the native population in that South American region. Brazil’s population is so diverse because of the historical colonization by Europeans, the importation of African slaves, and finally in the late 1800s, an influx (by invitation) of immigrants from Western Europe. All these folks intermarried within the ethnic groups, including the indigenous peoples to produce the ‘Brazilian’.
