It's not other Americans who create such nomenclature. It's blacks who created the term "African-American" to celebrate their African roots and, I assume, to replace the term "blacks", which does not seem derogatory to me. Irish-Americans and Italian-Americans (terms created by each group to celebrate their heritage) are generally associated with first-generation immigrants. US is a diverse country, but some groups also want to show pride in their origins. Just Curious

I'm Jewish, but believe it's important to respect the wishes of the one to be buried. If you don't have siblings, perhaps you have cousins who are willing to carry out your mother's wishes. If you choose not to participate in the service, that's your choice, but let me add that I have an Orthodox cousin who will not attend a relative's wedding if that relative marries a non-Jew and I find that a bit offensive. I'm white and live in a very integrated community in St. Louis - whites, blacks, Asians, Latinos. I get the reverse treatment from blacks, but not the other ethnic groups in stores by clerks. Some black clerks ignore or look away from white customers. Some even seem hostile for no reason (there seems to be an implied feeling of "your people enslaved my people." My people were immigrants here, not slaveholders.) It works both ways. I think many white women are afraid of black men they don't know because of high black crime rates. Just Curious

For Politicians, their main priority is getting elected or re-elected. This requires a lot of $$$ for campaigning. Big businesses & wealthy individuals provide this money & expect special treatment in return. That's why politicians provide tax loop holes and other forms of favoritism for the rich and large corporations and look the other way when laws are broken. Guess who has to pay more taxes to make up the difference? You & me. How else can you explain that over a dozen huge companies neglected to pay taxes (some over $100 million in taxes) and STILL got huge bailouts during the end of Bush's term? This is crazy and corrupt. What's wrong with the IRS? They can find some poor slob $2000 behind in taxes, but not companies who owe millions? If the wealthy paid their fair share of taxes, there would be more money available for health care, education and other ways to help the poor. Politiicans also know that poor people don't vote as much as middle class & rich folks. (This last election for Obama was an exception.) That's another reason, politicians don't cater to the poor. Just Curious

IN my personal experience and observation, when women need to spit, they use a kleenex so it's not so obvious. I have on rare occasions spit into the street when there was nobody around and no kleenex handy. if there's somebody around & no kleenex, I just swallow it. Just Curious

I'm white and live in a very diverse community - whites, blacks, latinos, asians. Latinos and Asians have never treated me different than others; however a small, but noticeable percentage of black clerks & supervisors treat whites in a racist way - make us wait longer than black customers, behave more rudely and do other things that give the impression they're trying to pay back all whites for slavery, even though most of us have nothing to do with it. Just Curious

Men have been almost totally in power in government, workplaces, most religions until fairly recently. I notion that low birth rate is the reason to outsource jobs is bogus. MAking money for the shareholders & outrageous salaries for the top dogs is most important. If companies can cut corners by farming out jobs at much lower cost, they'll do it - no loyalty to our country when the almighty dollar is involved. Secondly, (and here's where I see a possible conspiracy, or at least alack of forethought), because education in this country is not a high priority, our students have proved less competent in math & science than many other countries that churn out engineers and other qualified professionals. Test scores suggest this. As a former teacher, I also blame parents who do not make education a priority over tennis, baton twirling or watching TV. Just Curious

Probably because you come from a family where you were not treated with dignity and affection. If you were ignored, neglected or treated badly, that's normal for you. YOu may need counseling or self help groups to develop enough self-esteem to believe you deserve someone who's nice to you and to feel comfortable enough with yourself to know that it's better to be alone for awhile than in a lousy relationship Just Curious

I'm Jewish. Although Catholics were also persecuted & killed by the Nazis, due to thousands of years of anti-semitism, many Jews don't trust that gentiles really understand the feelings involved. Maybe you can do something online where it doesn't matter what your religion or background is. Here in St. Louis, more of the Reform temples are involved in interfaith outreaches. Perhaps you can get involved in something like that where you live to make the right kind of contacts within the Jewish community. When people get to know you better, they may be more inclined to help you get what you want. Just Curious

I can't speak for others, but I often fantasize about a guy I'm attracted to. I have to like his personality. If he's a handsome jerk, it doesn't work for m. Also, it has to be somebody I know, not a movie star. I also have some sexual fantasies about sexual activities that turn me on, but I wouldn't necessarily want to do them in real life. Sometimes I use internet porn, but not that often. Sometimes even gay male porn! Just Curious
