I would agree with your statement about the New TEstament, but as a Jew, let me remind you that The Old Testament was written thousands of years before Jesus was born. Orthodox Jews and certain fundamentalist Christians consider the Old Testament to be the explicit word of God as dictated to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The rest of us Jews and many non-Jews consider it a holy book written by religious people inspired by God. Many of the ugly bigoted attitudes of some Christians are based, according to them, on Old Testament passages. I’m certainly not blaming Jesus for the behavior of his followers. I’m saying that some of those who claim to be “good Christians” and have fear and hatred of others try to justify their bigotry by DISTORTING the bible, quoting passages out of cont

Please get counseling and medical help for depression. If you’re afraid to come out to your parents, perhaps you could tell them you’d like to see a doctor for your depression. If they ask why you’re depressed, tell them you don’t know why, you just are feeling sad all the time. Hopefully, they would agree to that. Some people are depressed not because of outside reasons but because of a chemical imbalance. You don’t need a reason to seek help for depression. Don’t wait! Just Curious

I don’t think homophobic people think very deeply nor do they empathize enough with others to care what happens to them. The suicide argument is not likely to change their minds. It’s sad, but true Just Curious

It would be ridiculous to think that regional accents are rude. Some people enjoy others who are different and enjoy hearing different accents; others are fearful of anything different. When it comes to Southern accents, my college speech teacher said that (rightly or wrongly) Northerners think that women with Southern accents are charming, that men with Southern accents are dumber than average. Just Curious

Yes & No? I certainly want someone who’s smarter. One thing a lot of people said about Bush before his first & second term: Yeah, I’d like to see him as my president. He’s the kind of guy I’d want to have a beer with. I thought that was idiotic and I was right! HOWEVER, Bill Clinton succeeded because although he is very intelligent &, educated, he is very personable and relates well to everyone, including the common person. Apparently, Adlai Stephenson lost his Presidential election because he sounded “too educated”. I guess people are afraid that a “brainiac” wouldn’t understand the problems of those who are less educated. Just Curious

Perhaps you can find someone through the internet who lives not to far away. But be careful! I’ve learned this from internet dating. Always meet a new person in public, suggest going out for coffee or a Coke. If they want you to meet at their house, don’t! You never know who it really is. Also, ask for their phone number in advance and talk with them by phone for awhile. If something about them doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts & don’t go! But, I hope you find someone nice and take your time. Just Curious

Do you remember Randy Newman’s song, “Short People”? It infuriated me until I realized it was a parody. (It was a parody, wasn’t it?) I’m 5’1″. Pants are always too long, even petites although i was thrilled when capris came out since they were the perfect length for me. I get frustrated not being able to reaching things. AFter getting a footstool, life is easier at home. Yesterday, after parking my car after 6pm, I couldn’t read the parking meter info on the rates & hours because the meter was so high. Just Curious

Some religious biggots hate gays and justify their hatred on some passages in the bible which they take out of context. Conveniently, many of these same people ignore other parts of the bible that would condemn some of their behaviors. Their feelings do not represent everyone else’s feelings and they certainly cannot know what God thinks or feels if there is a God. I’m Jewish, so I’m not an expert on Christianity, but I believe Jesus taught love and tolerance for all. True Christians try to follow that aspect of their religion. We all deserve love and acceptance. No living person knows for sure what God is or isn’t. That’s why it’s called faith and you are free to create your own image of God who loves and accepts everyone. Plese don’t judge God by hateful people who

The election of Obama proves that the majority of whites do not feel threatened by an educated black man. My question to you is: why do so many uneducated blacks feel that educated blacks are traitors to their race? Why are blacks who are working hard in school for a good education condemned as “trying to be white”? Just Curious

American Jews who feel very strongly about Israel, emmigrate there. Some have dual citizenship. As for the rest of us, it’s a matter of degree and not just a matter of loyalty. You have to understand that during the Holocaust, few countries would give refuge to persecuted Jews. Consequently, 6 million Jews were unable to escape and were slaughtered in Europe. Israel was established in part to be a safe haven for Jews around the world. It’s doubtful that the U.S. and Israel would become enemies since Israel is the only freely elected democracy in the middle east as opposed to Arab dictatorships. Just Curious

MY speech teacher in college, who taught in Louisiana before transferring to St. Louis told us this: In the rest of the country., Southern accents seem to make women more charming; men, more uneducated. Jeff Foxworthy mentioned the latter in one of his routines, that as soon as people hear his Southern accent, he knows his IQ drops 10 points in their estimation. British accents (not cockney) almost usually make the person sound smarter and more sophisticated – male or female. I imagine that much of this is based on movie and TV stereotypes – Scarlett O’Hara, etc. Just Curious

In my case, you’ve got it backwards. I’m less threatened by an educated black person (male or female) than an uneducated one because educated people tend to be more open-minded. Also, they are taught to think for themselves, not just accept urban myths and other untruths that uneducated people are more likely to accept without question. An educated person has more opportunities for a better life. I’m more afraid of uneducated black men who are angry, but feel impotent to change their situation, guys who use violence to express their discontent. Just Curious
