norbertneumanParticipantI recenly came out to my mother, and she doesn’t accept me as being gay. I have really great freinds, but they seem insensitive towards gay people. I have constant suicidal thoughts, and cant stop crying. How can I deal with the overwhelming saddness I feel?

DotParticipantYou are not a freak and you are not alone. You’re just living in a small town with narrow minded people. If there isn’t a GLAAD, PFLAG or other gay-friendly organization in your town, seek one out in a nearby city. You can’t let a few bigots determine what your life will or won’t be. You’re only 17, you have so much ahead of you. Keep in mind, when teens tell “fag” jokes and appear insensitive it is often because they’ve never had any proper gay role models. You can be that example for them. Show them that gay folks can be kind, competent, smart, funny and devoted friends. DO NOT DO ANYTHING CRAZY and seek out a suicide hotline at least if you’re feeling on the edge. It isn’t worth it.

ShirleyAveryParticipantPlease get counseling and medical help for depression. If you’re afraid to come out to your parents, perhaps you could tell them you’d like to see a doctor for your depression. If they ask why you’re depressed, tell them you don’t know why, you just are feeling sad all the time. Hopefully, they would agree to that. Some people are depressed not because of outside reasons but because of a chemical imbalance. You don’t need a reason to seek help for depression. Don’t wait! Just Curious
