ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberFirst, a couple who is through not fault of their own unable to have children will NOT be forbidden to marry in the Catholic church. If, for example, the woman is infertile through no fault of her own, she can still marry in the Catholic church. However, if a woman had her tubes tied, that is considered a form of birth control, which is against the teachings of the Catholic church. Or if a man is rendered infertile due to alcohol or drug abuse, he may be forbidden from marrying in the Catholic church. Hope that answers your questions. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberTeaching religion is NOT banned in public schools. Nor is prayer banned in public schools. What is banned is the teaching of only ONE religion and/or forcing a student to study a particular religion or religions, prayer that is led by a school official/employee, prayer at an event where attendance is mandatory, prayer where participation is required or coerced. The Easter Bunny and Santa Claus have nothing to do with any particular faith and are therefore not banned from public schools. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberFact, because that is the case in some situations. There are people who DO blow all their money and COULD control whether or not they become homeless but choose not to. However, that’s probably the minority. Ignorance because they don’t KNOW what it’s like to lose your job to downsizing because your company wanted bigger profits and chose to outsource your job to someone in China or India who will work for pennies on the dollar compared to your salary. Ignorance because they’ve been fortunate enough not to have been in that kind of situation and can only make assumptions.

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberMore complex answer, it depends on where you go. Discrimination because of religion occurs in every part of the world, but its worse in some places than others. Even in the US, there are areas where people who are not Christians are treated poorly. Near where I live, Wiccan bookstores have been picketed by members of the radical religious right. Jews have had headstones in cemetaries desecrated. Churches have had anti-Christian graffiti spray-painted on them. In some areas of the US, non-Chrisitans are virtually shunned. And that’s in a country where we’re guaranteed the right to follow the religion of our choosing. In countries where there is a state religin, it can be even worse. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberWhat about the father of 7th Heaven? What about all the other positive portrayals of Christians through the years? You said that Christians in the media are caricatured. A caricature is not meant to be a “role model”. It’s meand to exaggerate one or two particular facets of whatever it is being caricatured. With that said, have you looked at the Christian role models out there on the television? Swaggart (twice caught with a prostitute), Haggard (drug abuse), Roberts (Oral: give me 8 million dollars or god will take me or Richard: under investigation for misappropriation of funds for Oral Roberts University), Dobson (who believes he’s incapable of sinning ever again), Bakker (convicted of swindling millions of dollars from the faithful). ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberIt’s with all faiths. Not too long ago, there were horrible wars in India between various sects of Hindus. In the US, there are strong tensions between the various sects of Christians. Mention Fred Phelps to most Christian pastors and they’ll say he’s not a *true* Christian. One’s faith is very personal and when that faith is challenged, it can be frightening. No one wants to be forced to follow a faith they do not believe, but that is what is happening in some places among Christians, Muslims and other faiths. It wasn’t too long ago that being a Catholic became legal in England. In the days of the Plymouth colonies in Massachusetts in the 1600/1700s, being a Quaker could be punished by death! Which is why the wall of separation of church and state built into the US Constitution is so impo

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberThe red dot is a tradition of the Hindu faith, NOT of residents of India. The dot, which was traditionally red but can be any color whatsoever, signifies the third eye, the eye of spirituality that sees into other worlds. The red dot was also a reminder to keep one’s focus on the Divine. Both men and women wear it and it usually has no relationship to someone’s marital status. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberThe beard is grown because the Qur’an commands it and the Islamic hadiths (traditions) advocate it. It is said that Mohammed had a beard and Muslim men are to seek to emulate the Prophet in all things. Also, there are many Muslim laws that say men are not to do anything to their beards but they are to trim their mustaches. Shaving a beard is seen as imitating a non-believer or as being effeminate, neither of which is pleasing to Allah. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberWhen the south lost the Civil War, many white confederate men didn’t want the now free slaves settling in their areas. They also didn’t want carpetbaggers and the Union Army, which was in charge of the reconstruction of the south, to stick around. So they organized into local groups and began lynching those who disagreed with their goals of returning to the days when white men ruled without question and blacks were slaves. In addition to being against blacks, the KKK is also against Jews, Catholics, gays, communists and immigrants. The origins of the KKKs views on blacks, however, extends back much further than the civil war to the white man’s first interactions with African natives. The whites, with the more powerful weapons, captured and enslaved blacks, who were thought of as less than

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberJust like some Christians are but some aren’t. There is no singular “creed” that defines paganism. But I tend to believe that, generally, pagans are more accepting of homosexuality than most other faiths, quite possibly because they themselves have been persecuted for their faith and understand what it means to be discriminated against and hated for who you are. That said, I’ve met people of all faiths who do NOT accept homosexuality and I’ve meet people of all faiths who DO accept homosexuality. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberI do my best to ignore outward appearances and focus on the person within, regardless of weight, faith, race, age, etc. But I have to be good enough friends with someone– regardless of who it is– to invite them to my house. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberMy sister was an elementary school teacher whose first job was in South Carolina. She experienced the same kind of culture shock that you did. What is acceptable to ask about in the South is not the same as what is acceptable to ask about in the North or the West or in other countries. Religion– particularly Christianity– plays a very big role in the lives of most people in the South– that’s why it’s part of the Bible belt. Asking you about your religion is part of being polite and welcoming. Someone who won’t discuss their religion, therefore, is seen as rude or standoffish and may be given the Southern version of the cold shoulder. They’re not trying to be rude or nosy: that’s just what’s normal for them because of how they were raised.

ShellyStrauss RollisonMemberLet’s assume that 10% of the population is gay. That means that about 5% are gay men and 5% are lesbians. For simple calculations, let’s say that there’s a room of 100 people that you walk into. If they match society’s breakdowns, about 24 of them will be non-white. Of those 24, 12 will be female and 12 will be male. Of the 12 males, 1.2 of them will be gay and non-white. Out of the whole room, 5 men will be gay and 3.8 of them will be white. Since your choices on who to date are so limited to begin with, trying to stay within your own race if it’s non-white limits them even more. Love and Light
