Why do some people think that people who are homeless somehow had control over what happened to them and they could get a home if they work harder?

Fact, because that is the case in some situations. There are people who DO blow all their money and COULD control whether or not they become homeless but choose not to. However, that's probably the minority. Ignorance because they don't KNOW what it's like to lose your job to downsizing because your company wanted bigger profits and chose to outsource your job to someone in China or India who will work for pennies on the dollar compared to your salary. Ignorance because they've been fortunate enough not to have been in that kind of situation and can only make assumptions.

A lot of homeless people are mentally ill people who never got proper treatment. Many of them are also Viet-Nam vets. Many are also alcoholics. Some fall into all three categories. There is often no avenues for them to get help when you have people who think they are nothing but lazy bums.
