ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantAnd that’s the right to live their life as they see fit according to the beliefs they hold dear. Unfortunately, there are too many people who won’t allow that to happen. With that said, I don’t think that there’s much of a common denominator even among the many classes. What is valuable is like beauty: it’s in the eye of the beholder. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantIn this country, we have a very puritanical view of alcohol (among other things.) We don’t teach our children to drink responsibly. We make drinking this “reward” you get when you reach 21. And we regale them (maybe through our talking to friends when they’re in the room) about how much fun we had when drinking and all the situations we got ourselves into and we’re laughing about it and they see that and think “That’s a good thing if they’re laughing about it. I want to do it.” But they can’t. Because they’re only 14 or 15. They see their parents/aunts/uncles/cousins/family friends getting drunk at family gatherings but they’re not allowed. Kids, when they’re forbidden to do something, seem to go out of their way to do whatever it is they were told they can’t do. My oldest son went t

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantthen punishes them for doing what they’ve been taught. I agree with you 100%. We’re pushing our kids, even young girls of 5, to “dress sexy” and to “be sexy” and then complain when teenage pregancies start to rise. We’re sending kids mixed messages and as long as parents continue to support the companies who make these things for kids, they’re going to keep doing it. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantDiscrimination was legal up until the civil rights movement. “Separate but equal” schools were set up that were anything BUT equal. It was 1968 before blacks were legally allowed to marry whites in 16 states. That’s less than 40 years ago! Discrimination continues even today. If you think of it as a playing field, blacks started out in a hole and whites were (and still are) standing on raised mounds. Welfare is one attempt (and a very ineffective one) at leveling the playing field so that everyone has an equal opportunity to make a good life for themselves. Welfare, however, is a trap and once you get into it, it’s almost impossible to get out. You can’t make enough on welfare to live above the poverty level, and you can’t make enough working without losing the other benefits that welfare

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantAccording to the Americans with Disabilities Act, seeing eye dogs must be allowed access to wherever their owners are allowed access. The sign is alerting those who see the seeing eye dog in the store that simply because that dog is there doesn’t mean they can being their hunting dog into the store. It’s also showing the stores compliance with the ADA. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantTeaching religion is NOT banned in public schools. Nor is prayer banned in public schools. What is banned is the teaching of only ONE religion and/or forcing a student to study a particular religion or religions, prayer that is led by a school official/employee, prayer at an event where attendance is mandatory, prayer where participation is required or coerced. The Easter Bunny and Santa Claus have nothing to do with any particular faith and are therefore not banned from public schools. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantFirst, a couple who is through not fault of their own unable to have children will NOT be forbidden to marry in the Catholic church. If, for example, the woman is infertile through no fault of her own, she can still marry in the Catholic church. However, if a woman had her tubes tied, that is considered a form of birth control, which is against the teachings of the Catholic church. Or if a man is rendered infertile due to alcohol or drug abuse, he may be forbidden from marrying in the Catholic church. Hope that answers your questions. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantWhen someone goes blind (or is born blind), the other senses attempt to compensate for the lack of information that the eyes supply. For example, a blind person can “feel” a wall before they walk into it, whereas someone who is sighted but wearing a blindfold would probably walk right into it. A blind person’s sense of hearing is a lot more sensitive than the sighted. They listen for cars coming from the directions of the street they’re trying to cross. Some intersections have bells that ring when it’s safe to cross. Others have seeing eye dogs that know when to cross.

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantThere are different degrees of deafness just as their are different degrees of blindness. My grandfather was legally blind but could still see out of a small area. I just went to a performance put on by students who attend a school for the deaf and two of those students could actually hear a little with hearing aids but you had to talk slowly and a bit louder than normal. My guess is that they talk louder, slower and with wider mouth movements in an attempt to allow you to lip read what they’re saying since they don’t know sign language. Most people don’t know that only about 30% of the English language can be lip read and even more don’t know any sign language. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantIt’s eating unhealthy all the time that is the problem. It’s lack of exercise all the time that’s the problem. Giving kids candy one night out of the year isn’t going to hurt them in the long run. Kids go out on Halloween for the candy, not for apples or some other non-edible treat. But you can always pass out healthy treats, like yogurt covered raisins or peanuts. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantBefore the 1900s, people generally didn’t live long enough to develop dementia. They often died of other causes before they could develop dementia. It’s not like there’s been a surge in the numbers of people with dementia due to some external factor like what’s in the foods we eat. It’s more a factor of the longevity increasing steadily since the early 1900s. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantSomewhere along the line, you’re going to experience what all teenagers experience (barring medical problems): puberty. That’s when hormones take over, especially in males. And then all the talk is going to be about who he or she likes, who is going out, who broke up, etc. It all has to do with the beliefs subtly taught by American society to all the kids born or growing up here. 1. That in order to be happy, you have to have a partner. 2. That you’re not “complete” until you’ve found your “better half”. 3. That if you wait too long to find that person, you may never find them and die a lonely old man or woman.

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantUnfortunately, you’re trying to combat both a stereotype and what is common experience for many girls: nice guys only are nice until they get into your pants. Then they won’t give you the time of day. At your age, most guys are in the midst of puberty where hormones are raging and testosterone levels are a LOT higher than they are normally in males. Which means that most guys ARE thinking about sex a lot. I read about a study once that said the average guy thinks about sex seven times in five minutes if I remember the numbers correctly. When women hear things like that, and then have guys “talk” to their boobs instead of looking them in the eyes, it’s not really hard to understand why many girls would think that guys are only out for sex, is it?

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantYour orientation shouldn’t be up for discussion in the classroom just as a heterosexual’s orientation shouldn’t be up for discussion in the classroom either. Orientation is an issue that has no business in the classroom except from an educational point of view: ie, there are various orientations, here’s what they are. But a teacher’s personal life should remain outside the classroom. With that said, however, there is a growing trend by some of the more fundamentalist Christians to ban gay teachers from elementary schools. This is due to their belief that being gay is a choice and that exposing young children to those who are openly gay may “convert” them to what they consider a sinful “lifestyle”. (I’ve yet to have someone be able to define a gay or heterosexual lifestyle…) There is a

ShellyStrauss RollisonParticipantMy parents are Catholic and I’m one of seven kids. But Catholics have a form of birth control called natural birth control (or the rhythm method.) Essentially, it involves the woman figuring out when she is ovulating by taking her temperature, noting any vaginal discharge and the color of it, etc. She keeps track of this information and that allows her to know when she is fertile, which is really only a few days during the course of a month and is right around the time she ovulates. During those days, the couple simply does not have sex and therefore there is very little chance that she’ll get pregnant at other times of the month.
