A very good reason why families cannot handle the care of elderly parents is because of the 'epidemic' of dementia that was rare before 1900. As long as a parent is lucid and even if he or she is physically disabled to a certain degree, families can manage them and enjoy their company and there is still some contribution made to the family by them. But when they develop dementia with the accompanying paranoia, aggression, incontinence, loss of personality etc..it is next to impossible to keep the parent at home.

Before the 1900s, people generally didn't live long enough to develop dementia. They often died of other causes before they could develop dementia. It's not like there's been a surge in the numbers of people with dementia due to some external factor like what's in the foods we eat. It's more a factor of the longevity increasing steadily since the early 1900s. Love and Light, Rev. Shelly
