I see that most of the respondents who argue against senior discounts are in their 20’s. The majority of seniors are on a fixed income, some have had their pension stolen from them from companies to whom they dedicated decades of work. They deserve a break. Just Curious

Just because your ancesters did it, that doesn’t make it right. Think about slavery. (I’m white.) I’m Jewish and observant Jews are forbidden to hunt. The rationale is that the less we are exposed to killing and bloodshed of any living beings, the more respect we’ll have of for all life including human life. As a result of this commandment, Jews have historically had a very very low rate of violent crime. Just Curious

Now that you’re 8 yrs older, do you feel the same way? Sometimes women just want a sexual, affectionate relationship, but it’s hard for a woman to separate sex and love the way men can. Just Curious

Ask him or her. If you are a female and suspect your husband is bisexual and fooling around with men you have a right to know, esp. with the AIDS epidemic. A cheating spouse is a threat to marriage in any case, a cheating spouse having sex with other men could be deadly to you. Don’t be shy. Ask! Just Curious

Tolerance means respecting someone as an equal or at least worthy of equal treatment. Do you just “disagree with their lifestyle” or do you condemn it and consider gays inferior or immoral? (I’m straight BTW) Jesus taught love and acceptance. There is no reason to “tolerate” somebody who considers you inferior or immoral as long as they are not harming you or anyone else. Do you think blacks should tolerate or respect whites who think their race is inferior? Would you tolerate men who think women are all inferior to men? If you are asking gays to respect your idea that they are not worthy of respect and equal treatment, you are not asking for tolerance, you are asking them to accept bigotry. What would Jesus do? Just Curious

In gay disctricts of larger cities, esp. NYC and San Francisco, it would be acceptable. Most straight people, esp men are repelled by the sight of 2 men kissing. So, don’t look! Remember the outcry when the movie BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN came out? Just Curious

Thanks, Dot. That’s very insightful. I would add that during his disastrous 8 yrs in office, Bush encouraged divisiveness within the country. 9-11 seemed to unite Americans for a little while, but that didn’t last long. Thank God for Obama’s inclusive attitude. Technology has enabled us to behave impersonally and avoid direct face-to-face contact. We’ve become techno-cowards. Instead of resolving difficult interpersonal situations in person, or at least by phone, we shoot the other person an email or leave a message on their home answering machine when we know they’re at work. This relieves us of the awkwardness of responding in real time to the feelings of others. Businesses have learned this lesson by replacing most live receptionists with recordings & phone me

There are different categories of blood types: A AB B & O is one category. Rh+ and Rh- is another category. I’m not a biologist, but you may want to check some reliable websites (those that end with .edu instead of .com) that will explain the differences. I can’t tell from your question what your concern is. Are you a blood donor? Do you need a blood transfusion? Please specify. Just Curious

Wow! In movies, books and TV shows, families are generally portrayed as a warm fuzzy unit that provides love, safety & protection. For those of us raised in alcoholic, abusive or otherwise dysfunctional families, the term “family” connotes a scary, unhappy group of people we must protect ourselves from. Counseling may help the above, but if alcoholics, abusers and other dysfunctional family members don’t participate in recovery, it may be impossible to reconcile with them. Just Curious

in reply to: What makes someone lower, middle or upper class? #20754

Great question! Most people regard lower, middle and upper class in terms of income. However, education and professional status may not correlate to income levels. I suggested that YForum add EDUCATION as a separate category. I am an Honors college grad, but very low income due to a long history of depression. There are others, e.g., teachers & social workers, who may have graduate education, but are relatively low income. Great question! Just Curious

As a former English teacher, I lament the decline of proper English. In some cases, it’s just laziness. I’m not referring to fancy shmancy literary speech, just good grammar. It’s true that spoken language is more casual than written language. On the internet, anything goes and speed seems more important than precision. My English skills have come from a good secondary education and from avid reading. With the TV, internet and DVDs, few Americans read for pleasure any more. Apparently, some folks think that “keeping it real” is incompatible with taking the time and effort to speak correctly. It’s sad. If you look at those who have succeeded – Bill Gates, Obama, Colin Powell – they all speak correctly. It’s no coincidence. Just Curious

I agree. What’s worse and more dangerous are drivers who do the same. I’ve observed that in public parking lots and my own apartment parking lot, there are young drivers who zoom by (often talking on cell phones), not considering that small children may wander into the lots and that other safety issues are at stake. Just Curious

As a Jew, there’s no prohibition i know of regarding porn. I think it’s a legitimate outlet, esp. for males, sometimes a good substitute for cheating. However, if it becomes an obsession that replaces or harms a healthy loving relationship, it’s a problem. Just Curious

Most kosher Jews consider chicken to be meat, but you are correct since chickens are not mammals. Apparently, there was a famous Rabbi centuries ago who agreed that since chickens do not nurse their young, they are technically not “meat”. The issue boils down to the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. Few would argue that chicken flesh isn’t “meat”. That brings up another question I’ve had. Why are Jews forbidden to hunt, but allowed to fish? I do believe Jews commit less violent crimes because most of us are repulsed by the idea of killing animals and causing their bloody suffering. Just Curious
