If the mother's Jewish, the children are. If the mother's not Jewish, the children are not (but could convert, I suppose). I don't know how other religions make this determination.

Speak out, but first make sure you know what you're talking about. Do the research and know the historical facts - and if they're unclear, as they sometimes are, don't make the same mistake as the teacher and insist only one version is true. Also make sure the teacher is misrepresenting facts - don't rely on someone else's version of what this teacher is doing; find out for yourself. Then, when you're on solid ground, speak out - to other teachers, the administration, the school board, newspapers, students.

If you have a problem with homosexuals, that's your sad business. But to equate homosexuality, which harms no one, with incest and pederastry, which leave deep, permanent scars on victims, is simplistic, intellectually dishonest and without basis in fact. Such analogies are done with the sole purpose of inflaming others, and have no intent of educating anyone or engaging anyone in meaningful dialogue.

Just because he's elected president doesn't mean he has to give up or disavow his religion. He's not saying you or I have to believe in his brand of Christianity. He's not saying his religion is the nation's religion, or the government's religion. Arguing that the president should be allowed to pray in public could be seen as a violation of his own First Amendment rights. Indeed, the purpose of the religion clause of the First Amendment is to guarantee anyone -- even the president, who is a citizen like the rest of us -- the right to practice his or her own religion. The First Amendment can't be used to prevent people from praying as they wish.

Christians are a widely varied group and it's impossible to say they have any common characteristics beyond a belief in Christ as savior. Some Christians are tolerant. Some are bigots. Some are caring. Some are not. Almost any human characteristic can be found in such a huge group of people

If there were even a whiff of truthfulness to this answer, one would expect to find a greater incidence of homosexuality among the male children of single mothers - and there isn't. Or one would expect dramatic numbers of homosexual sons in the (many) families with uncaring fathers - and there aren't. It would be nice if we could avoid making up facts to fit our political or religious beliefs. As for the original question, just because one's brothers are gay doesn't make you gay. You know what you are, I presume.

I haven't seen or heard of the report you mention, but based on my experience as a reporter covering crime issues, I disagree that blacks are more dangerous than whites. Economic status is a much better predictor of criminal activity than race, and in one of the few examples where race does seem to be a factor - serial killers - the criminals are overwhelmingly white. I think there's a perception that blacks are more likely to commit crime, but to the extent this is accurate at all, I think it's because blacks are more likely to be poor, which is probably what drives the criminal activity.

Like many speech patterns that are tagged as black English, I think it's really more accurately described as Southern English. If you listen carefully, you'll find that "axing" questions and other speech patterns are shared between the races within socioeconomic classes. Many black families have moved from the South only in the last two or three generations - not long enough to shed Southern speech patterns.

My older son asked me why we have hair. I had no acceptable answer. Our little toes serve no purpose. What's facial hair all about? These things are all evolutionary leftovers, and so are male nipples, I suppose.

Murders take place for many reasons - money, jealousy, drugs. But when one person kills another because of that person's religion, race or sexual orientation and for no other reason, that's a hate crime. Hate crimes, unlike most murders, also are usually inflicted on people the killers don't know. Most murders arise out of a dispute. A hate crime happens when someone decides to kill the first black person or gay person he or she can find.

I don't think it's any coincidence that anorexia primarily affects young, Western white women - the main target of magazine and television advertising.

Ritual killing is a pretty shallow expression of culture, as are most barbaric acts. Human sacrifice was once part of the Judaic tradition. Female genital mutilation is looked upon as a horror by most people of the world. Christians once burned heretics alive. There's a reason modern cultures have moved away from atrocities like these - it's demeaning, senseless and just not civilized. So is killing an animal for no reason other than "tradition." Some traditions deserve to die.

If it had been a sincere attempt to learn about another heritage or culture, I think the question would have been more open-ended, rather than focusing on the possibility that you would bring something to eat that many people find weird or repulsive.

Telemarketers are a presumptuous bunch, and not just about sexual orientation. At my house, for example, they presume I make all the decisions. And, even more amazingly, they presume I want to talk to them at all instead of eat dinner with my family.

Roomates don't share every minute of every day together. You'll have time to yourself. I think it would be unusual for roomates to discuss it, and even rarer to do it together - but anything's possible.
