Laura GParticipantI felt the same way when I was in high school. I think in my case it had to do with being unpopular. I was getting acceptance from adults that I couldn't get from my peers, and I gravitated to the people who accepted me.User Detail :

Laura GParticipantFirst off, I want to say good for you. It's not an easy choice to make, and it's not an easy choice to maintain. That said, if at some point you decide to change your mind, that's ok. And if you don't, that's ok too. The important thing is that *you* are ready, and if you're not ready until your wedding night, then you definitely should wait. I thought I would wait til marriage, but eventually I changed my mind. My boyfriend and I discussed every facet of it before we made that decision, and I don't regret it. I did what was right for me, and you should do what's right for you.User Detail :

Laura GParticipantMy boyfriend's brother (26) is balding, and my BF denies the fact because he's afraid it'll happen to him, too. If it does, I won't care -- as long as he changes his hairstyle (my dad is balding with longish hair, and comes across as a badly aging hippie, even though he's not). Well-groomed is seriously more important (plus, in a few years, looking a couple years older than you are may help you get girls -- you'll look more mature and established).User Detail :

Laura GParticipantAlso, don't forget there are steps between kissing and sex. As an intermediary step, consider letting him finger you. It gets you used to him being in there, so you won't tense up; it works the muscles, so the pain will be less (lots of the pain is not from the hymen but from the muscles you don't use being atrophied); and it will teach him the way your body responds to foreplay so he can be sure you're ready. All this will greatly lessen the pain -- it did for me!User Detail :

Laura GParticipantYes, but when my male friends have this problem, it's usually because they're pants don't fit properly anymore.User Detail :

Laura GParticipantThere is another reason that, historically, it was considered more important for a woman to be virginal that for a man to be: The man needed to be sure that his children, especially his sons/heirs, were actually *his*. If a woman slept around, there was no way to know if the kids are his; if the man slept around and the woman got pregnant, it was her husband's problem, not her partner's. Now that women can own property and men can get DNA tests, this argument really shouldnt be relevant anymore.User Detail :

Laura GParticipantI've never heard about nurses in the US doing this, but I've read that there are cultures where kissing is public is seen as obscene, but sucking your baby's penis is just a calming technique (and an effective one, I would guess). I think the difference is that babies are not sexual beings. I would never do that myself, though!User Detail :
