I'm a teacher and get so frustrated by all the cynicism from older colleagues. If it were up to them, I would teach behind steel bars. My kids would be at arm's length, and I would not ever touch them. My kids are always hugging on me and wanting to be around me. I know the risk, but don't mind because some of these kids never have anyone show them affection. However, I'm not stupid. I'm never alone in the room with a child, and I always make sure that the contact is student-initiated. I think there is nothing wrong with male teachers in the lower grades. We should encourage more males in this profession. It is a shame that so many good candidates are being lost because of fear. The solution - supervision. If teachers were constantly being supervised, there would be no fear of inappropriate behavior.

Premature gray I can deal with, but balding? No. I agree that if you don't want to use Rogaine, you need to keep it extremely short. If your head isn't a funny shape, I would recommend shaving it bald. Now that's sexy! Whatever you do, in no way should you ever do that combover thing (it is never attractive). And toupees are a bad idea. Just let nature take its course and make sure that the rest of you is in great shape. Take the money you will save on hair products and invest it on your wardrobe. A bald head is made even sexier by a great body and a magnificient wardrobe. I think you can pull it off. At least you're not a prematurely balding female - now that's a problem.

I'm an African American whose parents are from Ghana, West Africa. I have never and never will celebrate Kwanzaa. We are Christians and celebrate Christmas. I don't know any other African Americans who celebrate this 'holiday.' I can't honestly say that I/we fully understand the reason behind the creation of a new celebration. I have noticed that a lot of blacks in America often try to make superficial connections to the 'mother land.' Perhaps this is yet another means in attaining that goal.

I read in the bathroom. As a matter of fact, I just finished reading 'James and the Giant Peach.' Last month it was 'The Count of Monte Cristo.' I started this practice while in high school. I was taking a lot of honors and AP courses and was finding that I could never find time enough to complete all the readings. I had a girlfriend who suggested I start doing my readings during my 'free time' in the bathroom (that's how she finished all the required readings). It worked because it forced me to be focused - I had nothing to pull my attention away. And usually I am in such a 'zone' that I stay in there long after the deed is done (usually long enough to read a chapter or two). I am now in a graduate program and still have the same habit. I even keep 'Where's Waldo' and 'I Spy' in there to keep me busy. I can't just sit there and do nothing. If I don't read a book, then I wind up counting tile, contemplating toilet tissue or reading shampoo ingredients. By the way, this is also a great place to polish your toes.

I'm thinking it's more your choice in movies. And besides, who goes to the movies on a date anyway? I hope this isn't a first date destination because that is no way to get to know someone. Perhaps these ladies are simply trying to start a conversation and would rather be in a setting that allowed such. And most importantly, who are these annoying people who are trying to talk to you during a movie?

Perhaps African-Americans display African art in their homes becaue they think Anglo art is ugly. Monet is hideous trash to me. American ancestry? Perhaps we should hang old chains, whips, and pictures of white masters beating and raping African women on our walls. Maybe we should all be given complimentary posters of slave auctions to hang above our beds as an everyday reminder that someone wanted us badly enough to pay for us and keep us in bondage? What part of this American ancestry should we celebrate?

My first year as a teacher was He**. I hated it. I am in my second year now and have to say things have gotten a lot better. However, there are inherent flaws in the system (not the kids or parents) that keep good teachers out. Thinking about my situation last year makes me cry. I dealt with all the issues including being sexual harassed by my studetns (5th graders). It'll take too long to discuss them here. I will say taht I'm glad that I was given the opportunity to be a part of the system. I have experience to speak to this issue. I now have a new philosophy on puplic education and education in America in general. I now know that when I have children of my own, I will think long and hard (I've started now) about letting them enter our public school system. More than likely, my kids will go to private school or will go to school in another country. I may consider home-schooling my kids. The question I want to ask all politicians who think that there is nothing wrong with the system is: 'Why don't your kids attend public school?' Have you ever wondered why the Bush daughters both attended private schools? Somehting has to be wrong if the system isn't good enough for them. If the president's daugheres can't attend a public school, then neither will mine. Aren't I better than the president?

i'm big, nay, i'm fat. i'm now actively trying to lose weight. my only motivation for slimming down is to attract a mate. this may sound superficial, but so what. i can honestly say that i don't envision myself with an obese man and i refuse to settle, so why should my future husband have to settle for me the way i am now? if you were to be honest with yourself, you would admit that you would be fierce if you were a slimmer you. i think that fat people are disgusted by fat people. i am. i often look at other fat people and ask my friends to let me know if that's what i look like. i'm finally so disgusted that i'm doing something about it. if you are fine with your weight then live and be happy in the skin you're in. don't worry about what others have to say. otherwise, do something about it either 1) change others - confront those people who speak ill about and educate them about your issue or 2) change yourself - work out and address your deeper issues.

in reply to: What’s wrong with stocking up at the store? #41934

My mom is the queen of budget shopping and coupon clipping. Our garage looks like a warehouse. This is what I'm used to. My friends make fun of me when they come over, but we are never in want. I remember going to the store with my mom as a child. She would have so many coupons (and of course it was double/triple coupon day) that the store would end up giving her money back and our purchases would be free. We have all grown up now, and our family is much smaller. It's now just my mom and I in the house, but I find that old habits are hard to break. Even while in college, I would clip coupons and stock up on items. I mean seriously, when are you not going to need toilet tissue, or soap, toothpaste, or deodorant? So, when it's on sale, why not stock up? It doesn't go bad. Ii find that things are always most expensive when you need them the most. Don't worry about what others say. Just know that my mother was able to put three kids through college on all the money she saved by buying bulk. There are just two of us in the house now but we still have a garage full of supplies and two refrigerators in the house. When I have a family of my own, I will definitely shop in bulk and clip my coupons.
