Fertility. We like big butts (and sometimes thighs) becuase it's a sign of fertility. I don't think we're conscious of it, but I think that's what it is.

The United States has a fairly recent history of institutionalized racial seperation. Therefore, Americans have a tendency to say things like black and white, instead of using terms unrelated to race. Living in the city of Chicago, this mind set especially holds true. Chicago is more segregated than Johannesburg, South Africa!

I'm a black male and I've been dating a latina for a few months. A latino friend of mine introduced us, but the minute we started hanging out without him, he became very jealous. I found this very confusing, since she and I weren't even dating (yet)...So given this, maybe latin guys are very possesive? And as for the whole cross-cultural thing goes, the guy who introduced us has and still goes for black women...So, who knows what's really going on? Personally, I believe blacks and latinos make good couples because we deal with a lot of the same struggles in society. I don't, however, have any qualms about a dating a black female ...*Just like MANY Latin guys I know*

Latino and Afro-Americans are stigmatized as 'the other,' where as Euro-Americans are considerded mainstream. Therefore, TV producers won't put 'the other' people in their commercials when they have the choice of using the always relevant-mainstream.

I have yet to read this book, but I think it might be what you are looking for: Learning to Be White: Money, Race, and God in America by Thandeka

I didn't blame white people for oppression, nor did I call them racists. I just asked - because they are not victims of racism - whether they are happy. By asking this question I was hoping people such as William and Matthew would empathize in order to understand my anxieties. The Afro-American has been stratified to the bottom of American society, and in many people's eyes (not just whites), we are seen as sub-human simply because of the color of our skin. On the other hand, the Euro-American is seen as the diametric opposite, which is precisely why I posed the question "Are you happy to be white?"

Knowing that you, your family, your friends, and other white people throughout the nation will never be oppressed for an arbitrary and stupid reason such as skin color, shouldn't you be happy? Shouldn't you be happy that overachievment is a 'problem' in your workplace instead of fear of being tortured or murdered by the police? Seemingly, what you (Matthew) have failed to understand is that when you experience racism every month of the year, you don't just view it as crap that you can move on from. And how does the 'baby daddy thing' or the 'booty shake' have ANY relevance to my question?

I have been called a nigger since I was eight years old and I don't think it had anything to do with me being sexually irresponsible. It seems to me that you have come up with your own definition based on a select group of afro-americans that you have had misfortunate encounters with. I sincerely believe, that when this word first came about; spawned by slavedrivers I suppose, it was not because the slaves acted impolite or did not value an education. Therefore, my logic tells me that the word nigger can be defined as: something that is neither man or woman, but foremostly not human. Wiiliam, I guess that my definition goes back to the rudimentary elements and yours is that of a modern racist southern male.

I assume you are referring to affirmative action in Corporate America. Fundamentally, the intent of affirmative action was to depress the tightly controlled networks of privileged white males who monopolized the good jobs and influential positions in U.S. society. That being said, arbitrary racism and exclusion that is institutionalized in education, health care, housing and employment cannot be overcome by affirmative action. The legacy dwarfs the policy by far. So what are you crying about? That African Americans might struggle to reach 10 percent representation on major college campuses and corporations? That is far from a black takeover.

No question is a dumb question, but Lisa, yours is ludicrous. As someone pointed out in one of the responses, there is a scientific explanation: evolution. What shocks me the most about this post is the responses by the grown men and women of the forum. Adults are supposedly the wisest and most mature of the human population, yet they have unjustly vilified a 16-year-old high school student for asking a question, one that has an uncanny resemblance to those of her white counterparts at Y? Forum. For instance, white people have asked 'dumb' questions like: why are all black people afraid of dogs, why are all black people in gangs, why do black folks riot when they don't get their way, how come they are afraid of water and why do they all shake their heads and snap their fingers when they talk? In my opinion, these are the most foolish questions asked in the entire race/ethnicity section. In spite of such ignorance, I have never responded by telling those who posted them to drop out of school and get pregnant!

Above all things, these shows take place in New York, where there is a high minority population. However, in Martin and Living Single, most of the show takes place in their homes. In Friends, a lot of the show takes place in a cafe, where you would expect to see a higher frequency of minorities coming in and out (as opposed to coming into their homes as guests.) Every color I know drinks coffee.

I have been told that because they eat so many oily foods (native of India) it opens up their pores and as a result they smell rather unpleasent.

The two occupations that I have held through out my life were in a library and a major bookstore. Working in the library I had seen many Indian/Pakistanis making copies of their computer books, and working as a cashier in the bookstore Indian/Pakistanis were notorious for returning them. Unfortunately for us, the majority of them did not bring back a receipt, took off the price tag, and then asked for all their money back in cash. For one, this was against store policy, and two, computer books become obsolete. Books stores want customers to return computer books as much as they want tattered used magazines.

For the sake of labels it would be best that immigrants from Africa be known as African-American, and those born in America be known as Afro-American. In parallel, the same should go for 'white' immigrants from Europe and those native to America. As logical as this may seem, not everyone will choose to agree. You will just have to accept the fact the people are entitled to their own opinion and therefore can be called African-American (or anything else) if they so desire. FYI, every Irish Euro-american I have met has been racist. It does not infuriate me that they do not call or ask to be called Bigot-Americans, but I sincerely hold that prejudice about them.

European merchants were the first involved in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Later on, African chiefs, kings and other leaders joined in. It can be argued that Africa would have been left out of the Trans-Atlantic trade if they (kings, chiefs, etc.) had not given up their subjects as slaves. As a result, there was inter and intra-ethnic wars, as well as the European merchants (moreover, slave raiders) capturing innocent Africans. Surely, the chiefs had no idea of the evils the Europeans were doing with their former subjects/enemies. Foremost, they saw their own benefits: in exchange for Africans, they received, among other things, guns and alcohol. Furthermore, they (leaders in Africa) were a part of the global trade.

That said, it is obvious that the Trans-Atlantic trade involved many forms of capitalism, yet at the same time it was the hallmark of inhumanity. If any Trans-Atlantic trader was to know this, it was the Europeans, assuming they had a heart.
