When I do it, I'm either: a) bored, and it is the equivalent of tapping one's fingernails, b) trying to keep my foot from falling asleep, or c) having a nervous tic.

Well, if all I have to do is #1, then no, I don't read on the toilet, because I'm outta there in thirty seconds. If it's #2, then yes, a lot of the time, I read. I started this little practice because I lived in a large, noisy household, and it was a way to read a few pages in relative peace and quiet. I do not, however, advertise the fact that I read on the toilet, and here's where I think men and women differ a bit.

Well, I haven't met very many Brits, but I personally think they are like other nationalities: they have their good and their bad. However, you're right, there are certain stereotypes that hold sway, such as the 'posh accents,' and that EVERYONE has tea every single day, and that the British don't demonstrate much emotion. I don't harbor any such stereotypes because I started watching BBC programs. ( :

Sweetie, I feel your pain. I also am constantly told what a great person I am, and not just by close friends and family, either. Yet I constantly get the, 'Wow, you're such a great friend!' or 'No way, she's like my sister!' lines thrown my way. I'm told there are men like this, and that's where the expressions 'Nice guys finish last' or 'Nice guys never get the girl' come from. Perhaps we just need to meet guys who are in the same boat...?

in reply to: Why don’t teens cherish virginity? #20157

People do care about it, very much. I am one of them; I am 22 years old, and still a virgin, and I plan to remain one until I fall in love. It isn't exactly for religious reasons, but it is still a strong conviction of mine, and one I've managed to uphold past my teens, despite a good amount of teasing and ridicule. Personally, I blame the availability of contraception for most teens' callous attitude towards sex. My mom (and several adult friends) tell me that in the 1940s-50s, sex was more taboo simply because you were much more likely to contract a disease, get pregnant, or cause a pregnancy. It wasn't so much that sex was dirty or a sin; it's that it had repercussions and consequences that could mess up your whole future. Nowadays, that warning has been sidelined by the massive availability of birth control, leading teens to think that sex has next to no consequences. Don't be so discouraged. I knew plenty of teens in high school who had chosen to remain virgins until marriage, but they weren't vocal about their decision because they were afraid of being teased. All because they don't speak up about it doesn't mean they haven't silently made the same choice.

Yeesh, I'm sorry your situation is so horrible. It's also really pissing me off, because those idiots are giving Southerners a bad name! I lived in South Carolina for many years, and encountered many kind, generous, patient people, as well as the odd a**hole or two. Maybe it's just that town in particular that has a higher ratio of them. My advice: find a Southerner in that town who seems friendly and educated, and explain your situation as politely as you can (no one likes to hear their town dissed, even if the place is a dive). They should be able to sympathize or give advice, or perhaps steer you towards people who are like-minded.

in reply to: How come women can be short? #19270

I personally love short men, because in my experience they are used to being overlooked/ridiculed, and therefore have developed better personalities than the tall, more 'manly' men. This also means that they are usually more eager to please as lovers. I try to help out the shorter guys by sharing this discovery with every female I come into conversation with. I do what I can. Well, I know why I do it: to stop hair from poking through my stockings (which just looks weird). It's damned uncomfortable to have all those hair follicles pulled back in a direction they aren't supposed to go!

I think it depends on the guy's body language, and whether or not he's obviously flirting while talking to me. Of course, some more conceited members of the female sex will assume that E-V-E-R-Y guy who speaks to them or looks at them secretly wants to date them. (I've had at least two friends who displayed this obnoxious behavior, and guys seemed to find it equally disturbing.)

Okay, I just thought that I should point out that I've never heard men say or infer ANY of these horrible things! Most of the complaints I've heard men making about women are in regards to women's obsession with a man's income/car. Maybe I should sneak into the men's room.

Miss Nathalie, I couldn't agree with you more. I stared in amazement at the TV screen as angry Americans poured out bottles of French wine, and anti-France jokes became the norm for quite a while. I refuse to see most new movies that come out because I am disgusted by the way other nationalities are portrayed. I, for one, am ashamed of how unforgiving my country can be in regards to other nations. Now, having said that, allow me to go off topic a bit here. I am so glad that you are determined to, as you say, 'believe in the human individual, no matter where they are from.' But, to group people together for a moment, I have found Canadians to be the absolute best tourists. I lived in south FL, which every winter was deluged by 'snowbirds,' as we refer to them: people from up north looking to escape the winter cold. All the Canadians I met were wonderfully polite and delightful.
