RachelParticipantMen are visual, meaning they are stimulated by the visual. Thus they find porn stimulating. Men also think about sex about every 6 minutes, so it’s an outlet for them. Women are intellectual. We’re stimulated by thoughts — mentally. Pictures don’t do so much for us. Why does the porn bother you? Is it because he looks at it all the time? Is it the type of porn (hard core…deviant…etc) that he looks at? If it’s just the tame Playboy type, I’d let it go (and do read the articles, they’re really good!) If it’s hardcore and makes you uncomfortable, I’d question whether I wanted to remain with this guy.

RachelParticipantMost Catholics, my husband among them, look at the teaching of sex for procreation only as a joke. For that matter, vasectomies aren’t permitted under Catholic ‘law’ because that’s a form of birth control, allowing sex without the possibility of pregnancy. To think that millions of people out there quit having sex after the possibility of conception no longer exists is simply laughable. Might as well expect people to quit eating.

RachelParticipantYou have clearly not experienced a lifetime of suspicion and avoidance because of the color of your skin. If you were a man of color, you would notice all the little old ladies walking down the street passing you who firmly grasp their pocketbooks close to themselves the moment they see you. You would notice other, mostly white folks, step aside a bit when you pass. You would notice white guys getting the jobs you are perfectly qualified for again and again. A lifetime of disregardful treatment would help you understand why. I do. I’m white and I really don’t believe there’s so much a conspiracy as there is an insipid, underlying distrust and suspicion along with a sense of superiority on the part of many whites toward blacks in particular. This is especially true in the United States. I see such vast differences in Canada.

RachelParticipantIt’s a myth. Black people can (and do) get lice. Thing is…lice cannot survive in oils. Blacks who use heavy oils or greases in their hair have an immunity because of this. One the eggs cannot stay attached to a well-oiled hair shaft. Two, the legs of lice cannot properly grasp well-oiled hair. Three, the lice will not be able to breathe in heavy oils. (One of the treatments to rid a person of lice is to saturate the hair in oil and cover it with a shower cap….the lice suffocate and the eggs will be released from the hair shaft.) Blacks who do not use moisturizers/grease/oils, etc., in their hair are MUCH more susceptible to getting lice. In black children who’s hair is not well moisturized, you’ll see lice. If their hair is not moisturized and left to be dry — they can get lice, and they can get the same lice as the white kids get.

RachelParticipantSun is very harmful to people, including people of color. Pale-skinned people burn very easily in the sun — for some of us 20 minutes is long enough to have a very painful and very damaging burn. Continuous exposure to sun’s rays will cause skin cancer. It’s a very real concern for many people. Two of my children are biracial and while they have a nice caramel color, they too will burn without sunblock.

RachelParticipantI don’t think that liking girls 3 years younger than you makes you a pedophile. Many women have smaller breasts…some ethnicities tend to have smaller breasts. Do you only like newly developing breasts? THAT could be a problem. I think that if your only reason for liking younger girls is because of very small breasts…if you can find say an Asian girl who has very small breasts, who is not younger still attractive and be attracted to her…then you’re probably fine. But as you age, your preferences will probably change, anyway…and hopefully so will the age of the girls you find yourself attracted to.

RachelParticipantI have two biracial children and have found that biracial hair is NOT the same as white hair OR black hair. Obviously, with a boy, you can keep it short and moisturized if it tends to be dry. Curlier hair tends to be drier, but not as dry as pure black hair. Lighter moisturizers work well. I’ve found the very BEST moisturizer for my dtr’s hair is olive oil (always extra virgin, so it doesn’t smell). Her hair fully absorbs the oil and doesn’t get tacky or attract fuzz like grease or other heavy moisturizers. Avoid hair brushes because they split the ends and make the hair more frizzy — a soft bristle brush is fine for finishing, but use very wide tooth combs or pick combs first. I’ve found the ‘just for me’ detangling spray works great. Leave-in conditioners, too. Your SIL will find that her dtr’s hair texture will change as she ages….it will gain more texture and may require even more moisture than olive oil provides. I put the olive oil in a spray bottle and spray it on after a bath. You can’t wash biracial hair every single day like you can white hair because it is too drying…and biracial hair is drier than white hair. Once or twice a week is often enough with regular combing/brushing in between washes. Chemical straighteners should not be used as they are very damaging to the hair and can burn the scalp. You’ll find that black girl’s hair styles will not hold as well in biracial hair — twists and braids will last about 1/2 as long and get frizzy more quickly. Tiny braids are damaging because they break the hair and should not be used very often. Use non rubber bands to hold the hair, latex ones or fabric covered ones are good. Once she’s gone through puberty, she’ll be able to chemically straighten her hair if she chooses. As for non-chemically straightening the hair (with a brush and blowdryer) there are straightening balms that work very well — they’re not greasy or waxy, so moisturizer still needs to be added, but these balms work with a hairdryer and brush and don’t do the damage that hot combs or straightening paddles/irons will do. Again, this will only last one day in no/low humidity and would have to be touched up each day it’s worn this way. Probably not a good idea at 4 years old, but your neice would probably like it when she’s 8, 9, 10. I hope you’ve found this helpful. Feel free to email me if you have further questions.

RachelParticipantIt’s because our legs go numb when crossed — usually the top one. Switching them restores circulation.

RachelParticipantAs an American transplant to Canada…I get it. Of all the Americans I know, there are very few who take the time to really learn & remember much geography. America is so big, and has so much to offer that Americans really don’t have to leave their homeland to get a fair amount of variety. One thing I’ve noticed since I moved here is the maps printed in the states that show all of North America show America as much larger than Canada. Seriously — it looks smaller on maps I have in my home. I was surprised to realize the sheer mass of the provinces. All the media in America (unless you watch the BBC and other imports) is American-centric. All America, all the time. Little connection to the rest of the world, and even the world news (after the local) spends about 1/2 its time talking about American stuff. We’re taught to be egotistical. We’re taught to be narrow sighted with regard to the rest of the world and our place in it. Helps us to vote for ppl like our current president.

RachelParticipantHe’d have to do it every two hours every day for about a month. Adoptive mothers can breastfeed their babies by pumping their breasts regularly until milk comes in. It has to be done as frequently as a newborn would — about every two hours. So…doing it once a week or even once a night isn’t going to make you have milk.

RachelParticipantI think it’s deeper than that. I was married to a very abusive man who accused me of having an affair with every man who ever said hello to me in public…even ones walking down the street in front of our home. I packed on over 100 lbs while married to this man and only recently realized that I did it to make myself more unappealing to outsiders and to stop the accusations. The accusations never stopped, and even the bad eating habits stayed on till I started healing from the abuse. A lot of people eat to avoid dealing with unsavory emotions, too. I know I’ve eaten my way through stress when it would have been much healthier for me to address the problem or take a nice, long hike to ponder what was going on. I know that now, but I didn’t see it then. Also, in my head…I still see myself as thin — the body I had before the abuse (from my spouse AND from myself in the form of overeating). I always have seen myself that way — not that I don’t see what’s reflected in the mirror, but that the image I carry around in my head of me is not the size I am today. I’m losing, too.
