'You need to make better use of your time than asking dumb-ass questions about my people.' The purpose of this forum is so that people can ask questions about things they don't understand. I am interested in reading everyone's views, and I always learn something. I'd rather encourage people to write in with their questions rather than insult them for doing so.

I looked up the definition of 'refugee' -- it's a person who flees in search of refuge. Sounds accurate to me.

I attended a large, crowded junior high school in Indiana. On a couple occasions I bumped into an African-American female schoolmate in the halls between classes, and each time the girl slapped me in the back of my head. I was 12. When I was 14 I got into a fight with one girl because she thought I got too close to her lunchtray. I was bullied by Caucasion kids and hit by the African-American kids, and I think everyone who hurt me had parents who taught them to be mean. Anyway, I think anyone who yells or hits when they are bumped into probably does so because they mistakenly learned that such behavior is appropriate.

We know it's just the zipper. That happens on some women's jeans too.

Younger people tend to be very concerned with the way they look, and for white people, the tan look is in. Your teammates are probably a little self-absorbed. Even if they spend 23 hours a day in the sun; no one needs to make sunblock and tanning a constant source of conversation. No doubt you get tired of hearing about it.

I have thin, fine hair and there's not a lot I can do with it. I have several clip-on extensions to make it look prettier, and if I could afford it, I would get real extensions attached to my hair in a salon. It doesn't take hours and they're not pasted on, by the way. Every woman on the planet, regardless of race, has the right to look her best.

There's nothing wrong with you. Try to be comfortable with yourself the way you are. I think of it like drinking coffee. Lots of people love coffee. Lots of people love different varieties of coffee. Personally I can't stand it. Same with sex and masturbation. It may seem like the rest of the world is having sex, but that doesn't mean that you have to also. Take it easy; you have the rest of your life to evolve into the person you want to be. Maybe you could search for Christian websites to get info on this subject also.

I dated an African-American man for several months, and we never acted in the way that you described. We were together because we cared about each other very much, and never felt the need to put on an act for anyone. We felt very comfortable around each other and were comfortable being together around others, no matter what their race was. Maybe some couples feel like they have to put on an act because they don't feel secure in their relationship, or feel like they have something to prove.

You must have been surprised to receive that response from someone you worked with for so long, who you probably thought was your friend. It might be difficult, but I would suggest sitting down with her sometime and asking her why she responded the way she did. Living with racism may have caused her to feel frustrated with questions such as the one you posed, hence the 'you too dumb to know that?' remark. However, I think you asked a legitimate question, and I think a legitimate question deserves an answer.

If you like your dreads, by all means, wear them. It's your hair and it doesn't matter what others think. I hope nobody judges you by any measure other than your character, but if they do, don't lose any sleep over it.

I wouldn't consider myself a bodybuilder, but I do lift weights. My muscles look better with a tan--but I use the kind that comes in a bottle. Self-tanners are easy and safe. Also, I believe that most bodybuilders use tinted oil or something like that when they compete on stage. What you see isn't as dark a tan as it looks.
