I'm African American and have yet to understand why any woman would rather wear fake hair than her own. And by the way, the hair is not pasted on, it's sewn in, and it doesn't take hours to do. And you should ask the same of celebrities like Britney Spears, who wear extensions as well.

Why do black people buy hair and sit for hours to get it pasted on?

The truth is that hair weaves, wigs and extensions are used by all kinds of women - just like make up. It's used to enhance a person's appearance. Even QVC sells hair pieces that are clearly designed for Caucasian women. By the way: Why are you certain that pasting hair on is a lengthy process? I would think that it's fast and easy.

Hair extensions give many women the flexibilty to constantly change their looks. If it is done right it is beautiful. Many caucasians wear hair extensions to increase the volume of flat hair and I am sure if their hair could hold braids they would certainly have this look. I always wanted to know why caucasians tan for hours when it is definitely life threatening unlike weaving which is not life threatening. Lastly, why does anyone really care about why people wear fake hair I believe some people are afraid to step out and change because they are concerned what others would say. Live a little, life is to short to worry about small things.

When one is fed over and over again that European assets and Afrocentric assets are not, then why not. Most caucasian women have hair that has the ability to grow long and strong and MOST black women do not because of the texture. So, when every hair care ad is showing white women with long flowing hair, how can one not want that kind of hair? It's propaganda.

Mimi, This is a very 'brave' a legitimate question that you are asking. Many whites have questions about it but are afraid of asking because they think black females will get offended (which, quite honestly, many would), that's why we have this forum. Wearing weave is no different than Women who get breast implants (and not the ones that are doing it because of breast cancer). In general, white women will go under a knife... major surgery...risk their life unnecessarily, for boobs. Why? Because in 'their society' bigger breast equals beauty. Many years ago, black women straightened their hair to give the appearance of "whiteness". We were more "accepted" in the white communities. Even if the black community is being honest with ourselves, we know that many times we would make negative references to our own people (kinky, nappy head, etc) if they did not have straight hair or do something to have it straightened. Now a days, many blacks wear their hair natural. I am a black female who wears a weave. Why? Well everyone has his or her own reasons for it, mine is because, I just look better with longer hair. I am a heavyset woman with a very round face. My own hair (unlike my sister who has naturally long hair) will not grow. Weaving gives me the option to do what I feel that makes me look better. Weaves can be inserted many ways. The 'old' way was by a way of 'pasting'.. but it's called 'Bonding'. It is a glue like substance that allows the weave to stay on the hair. But it can also damage your hair, so the most popular type of weave is to have it sewn in. Many women and men do various things to enhance themselves. There is nothing wrong with wanted to do that . But make sure that you truly love yourself for "who" you are "right" now. If you don't, no amount of "enhancement" will ever be satisfyin

pasted on? wow, very disappointing. It's convient, it's pretty and its lasts. Simple as that. How do you think that Brittany and Christina can have short hair in one video and long in the next. They sell hair extensions for EVERY race in wal-mart. There are also wigs and tupees for white women and me.

I am a white female that quite often has hair extensions or braids put in my hair. For one reason is that my hair is rather thin and this enhances it and also it is most generally easier to take care of. Quite often I do not have to set it, hot comb or even brush it because it stays in place. It is not necessairly a race thing, just personal preference. Also this method and hair infusions is not being used on cancer victims to help self esteem with much sucess.

I am a black male and have been somewhat curious about this myself. However, let's recall that Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson all have worn extensions as fillers at some point. Also, with the exception of braids, does it really take that long? Not from what I have seen.

If you think that only Black people get weaves or hair extensions---you are wrong. I have been to salons and seen many White people go into the privacya room and come out with extensions. Sometimes women get false hair because their own hair is thin, or sometimes it's just for a different look. It's just like a wig, and people of all colors wear them and no one thinks it's a big deal! I think that if more White women knew how to apply weaves they would get them.

There are several ways to answer this question. First and foremost, there are a few ways of weaving hair: 1) by 'pasting', or actually glueing the wefts of hair to the head. 2) by having the hair sewn into 'tracks' or 3)by braiding the weaving hair in with the client's own hair. Though hair weaving has become popular in many cultures, Black women are most known for wearing their hair in weaved styles. One of the reasons why is because there is still a standard of beauty in this society that says longer hair is more attractive. African-American hair has a much different texture than Caucasian hair. Our hair grows out in tight coils, as opposed to straight. Straight styles that black women crave require them to straighten their hair with chemicals. As a result of these chemical treatments, our hair becomes damaged and breaks off. Therefore, it doesn't appear to 'grow' as fast as Caucasian hair. So in the interim, we use weaves as an alternative. Not all women who wear weaves are brain-washed into believing that long hair is better. Some simply like the versatility that weaving accomplishes.

Because we a black women are trying to conform to the euro-centric standard or beauty on long straight hair. If you observe the media, black women are constantly being bombarded with the idea that you are only beautiful if you have long straight hair. I have never seen a black (runway) model with natural hair on television. The only models I've seen with natural hair have been in Essence, Ebony, or some black hair magazine. If you look at the black women who have executive jobs, how many of them have locks? The most popular black women celebrities who are considered beautiful are Holly Berry, Beyonce, Tyra Banks. All who have straight and/or long hair. They also all happen to be 'lightskinned'. These are the same women you see in the mainstream makeup and hair commercials. These images are sending an subliminal message to black women that our natural hair is not beautiful. Combine that with the shortage of eligible black men and we have low self pride level among black women. Slowly I am starting to see more images of black women in the media with natural hair be we have a long way to go.

It used to be all the rage for white women to use hair pieces to enhace their beauty, big fat pads of it hidden under curls to poof it up, or to shave our heads completely and wear wigs. While not as noticeable as the big fat pads of hair, many white women today still add and subtract from their hair. Like mentioned before, Britney Spears, Christina Aguleria, the olsen twins.

Most black people cannot grow their natural hair down their backs, sometimes not even past their shoulders because natural black african hair is fragile, wiry, and breaks off easily. Therefore, because long hair is seen as feminine and beautiful in the dominant culture, black women get weaves and extensions. If you're not mixed with white or something else as a black woman you're lucky if you can grow hair past your shoulders.

It's absoulutly to fit in. The same reason why most black look like they were born with perfectly straight hair.(they weren't) It's called a relaxer. Most Black women hate their naturally kinky, nappy, corse hair. WHY???? Because that's not wat's in in America.
