LaurieParticipantYes, short people sometimes get upset with how short they are. Yes, they get frustrated with not being able to reach certain things. And they are frustrated with getting weird looks from people.

LaurieParticipantTo follow up on above response, ‘Islam’ is the religion, like ‘Christianity’ or ‘Buddhism’.

LaurieParticipantAll orthodox Jewish women don’t wear wigs, only the married ones. Or, they can wear a hat or scarf. (Remember Fiddler on the Roof? The single women partially showed their hair, and the married women didn’t). It’s because hair is considered a woman’s crowning glory, i.e., sexy. So after she’s married, she will only let her husband see her real hair. Strangely enough, wigs are now made so attractively that some orthodox Jewish women wear gorgeous wigs over their own hair, which sort of defeats the purpose. But it’s considered fine to do, as long as their own hair doesn’t show.

LaurieParticipantSome parts of the Koran (Muslim scripture) are firmly opposed to this. Other parts of the Koran say it is the right thing to do. ‘Fundamentalists’ believe the latter; ‘moderates/ modernists’ say that the quote is taken out of context and refers only to a certain time in the Prophet Mohammed’s life when there was a war going on.

LaurieParticipantHi; I’m female, heterosexual, and 55, and I am in a 7-year relationship with a guy. Sometimes he’s not in the mood for sex when he’s worried about his finances. When that happens, I don’t say, ‘What’s the matter, don’t I turn you on?’ nor ‘Are you cheating on me?’ I just say, ‘Sorry you’re feeling anxious,’ and ask if there is anything I can do to relieve his anxiety. (Usually he takes this opportunity to talk about his worries.) The women I hang out with are like me in this way too. My guess is that younger women are more likely to act like you’ve described than older women, due to lack of: experience, understanding or maturity. I also think women’s responses may vary from subculture to subculture. I’ve also noticed that TV, ads, etc. today promote the attitude you described more than they did when I was in my 20’s.

LaurieParticipantI don’t think there is such a thing as ‘Hebrew’ food. Hebrew is the name of the language that is spoken in Israel; it is also the language that the Jewish Bible (Old Testament) and Jewish prayers are written in. Perhaps you are thinking of Israeli food – food eaten in Israel. Or perhaps you are thinking of ‘kosher’ food — which is food which is permitted under Jewish law. (No ham, no mixing of milk products and meat products at the same meal, etc.) The food you describe sounds kosher. It also sounds Eastern European (Russia, Poland), and since many Jews came to the US from E. European, some people say ‘Jewish food’ when they mean ‘Eastern European Jewish food.’

LaurieParticipantYour question is unclear. Maybe that’s why you got no responses. Could you describe the situation in a little more detail?

LaurieParticipantFrom what I’ve read, Canada is less racist. And the reason is because Canada did not enslave black people, as the U.S. did, so their traditions and culture are less racist.

LaurieParticipantThe reason alcohol and tobacco are legal and marijuana are not is due to history and traditions. Since alcohol has been used since early times, Americans tend to think of it as a ‘better’ drug, but actually it is more dangerous than marijuana. If tobacco were introduced today, it would be illegal due to its health risks, but since it is already part of the mainstream culture, it hasn’t been made illegal.

LaurieParticipantFrom what I read about 10 years ago, part of the Japanese culture is that it’s not important to make a good impression when you’re a tourist in another country. I don’t know if this is still part of the culture.

LaurieParticipantI had a friend whose son had juvenile arthritis. Although he was about 7 years old, she sometimes took him in a stroller because he was unable to walk. He did not look disabled to outsiders.

LaurieParticipantHassidic Jews do not shake hands with members of the opposite sex. Orthodox Muslims do not shake hands with members of the opposite sex. But I don’t know what they do in the business world.

LaurieParticipantHi. I love classical Indian dance, too, and I am white. When I attend classical Indian dance performances,, about 90% of the dancers are Indian; about 9% are white; about 1% are black. The teachers are traditional Indians, and they don’t keep non-Indians from performing or taking their classes. I encourage you to take classes. This is the most gorgeous dancing and we need all the classically trained Indian temple dancers we can get!
