Do most Muslims consider killing infidels acceptable or even expected?

The really whacked-out fundamentalist ones do, hence the Intefada, the Jihad, Al-Qaeda, etc. The Q’ran is fairly mum on the issue of killing non-believers, although it IS interesting to note that the folks targeted by the aforementioned whacked-out fundamentalists – i.e. Christians and Jews – are specifically mentioned in the Q’ran as ‘Children of the Book’, and are supposed to be treated as kindred monotheists, and respected.

Based on the way the question is framed, the answer is obviously yes, to some who call themselves Muslims. If the question is whether murder is acceptable in Islam, the answer is no. So-called Muslims who endorse killing do not even understand that the Koran makes no distinction between the Prophet Mohammad and the prophets and kings of the Old Testament, and the Koran respects the prior religions such as Judaism and Christianity. There is no compulsion in Islam to accept the faith. However, as often is the case, fringe elements in every society will twist their bliefs and others’ to pursue their own agendas.

Some parts of the Koran (Muslim scripture) are firmly opposed to this. Other parts of the Koran say it is the right thing to do. ‘Fundamentalists’ believe the latter; ‘moderates/ modernists’ say that the quote is taken out of context and refers only to a certain time in the Prophet Mohammed’s life when there was a war going on.

If the question is do Muslims believe that infidels should be killed because they are infidels, the answer is a categorical no. Not even the terrorists market their crimes as such. This whole paradigm is basically a Western projection based on a handfull of British ‘Muslim’ ultra-extremists who are even beyond Al-Qaeda. To organizations involved in the Palestinian-Israeli and Lebanese-Israeli conflict, Islam is a context, a background, rather than a cause or active player. Before there were ‘Islamists’ doing these acts there were communists and Pan-Arab secularists doing the same. As far as Al-Qaeda is concerned they try to rationalize their actions by saying they are in self defence (most Muslims approve of killing in defense) because Muslims have been under attack from the West for over a century. The argument was mostly lost in the Arab world because basic Islamic principles forbid targetting civilians in war. But to be honest, some people still cheered on 9/11. But even these people stopped when Al-Qaeda started targeting hundreds of Muslims in Muslim countries.

Yes… in the qaran there is plenty of backing to kill infidels or make them convert. As to the often pointed out “respect the people of the book” clause. This is mentioned 3 times. To kill everyone who does not recognize the prophet muhammed is mentioned 18 times. Even in the moderate sections of the qaran it says that you must tax exceedingly high on the infidel until the convert or die from poverty. Of course in leviticus it says that if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night she should be stoned to death on her fathers door. So i guess everyone picks and chooses.

Except for the Koran demands the killing of the polytheists- of which I am one. It demands the slavery of Jews, and Christians if they don’t convert, and the death of everyone else. Which is why I can’t understand the so-called tolerance of so many wiccans. Life’s a banquet and most poor bastards are starving to death!

The Bible advocates stoning and slavery, the Torah speaks of avoiding menstruating women and never wearing mixed fabrics. Most Christian and Jews are able to look at the texts for what they are, works of man written thousands of years ago. NOT as the absolute truth or word of God. Why do we assume all Muslims take the Koran literally? Most do not.
