I believe you can blame this one on television. No matter if it’s a drama, a comedy or a cartoon, you can bet that the thickest character will have a southern accent. Now, contrast this with the fact that the stereotypic “rocket scientist” is a man with a leaky pin in his pocket, thick black glasses, a southern accent – and works for NASA. Go figure.

I have many acquaintances that are from other countries. I always ask where they are from and it eventually evolves into a learning experience, not to mention a lot of laughs. Eighty years of propaganda is hard to overcome, no matter the amount of scientific data to the contrary. Marijuana could be a vital tool in the treatment of alcoholism, which would save lives, save families and save tax dollars, yet the taboo cannot be overcome. It will be legalized, but only when the public is educated and willing to stand up and demand it.

My opinion is that they simply don’t realize how offensive they are to non-upstaters. They can be loud and gruff, but they will also be the first to stop and offer help if you’re stranded in a snowstorm on the side of the road. Granted, while they’re digging you out they will tell you everything you did wrong to get yourself into the situation (and probably not politely either lol,) but that’s just their way.

It’s a private property issue as far as I’m concerned. If you own a business, you should have the choice of making it smoking or non. If you want both, then accommodate both, but the government nor anyone else should not have the right to tell you what to allow in your own establishment unless it is illegal. I would love to see a federal class-action suit filed on this issue.
