Brendan M.ParticipantI felt the same way in high school. I always felt, perhaps rightly, more mature than some of my peers. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And it gets better in college; I have plenty of friends my own age now. They never seem immature to me.

Brendan M.ParticipantYou seem to assume that it isn’t possible both to support the United States and to buy a foreign car. It is possible. Furthermore, I wouldn’t buy an American car just to support the American economy; I would buy the best car for my money, regardless of where it is from or where the money goes, and feel zero guilt. As for your observation that the American flag stickers are more common on import cars — it may just be that you notice them more on non-American cars.

Brendan M.ParticipantI feel the same way sometimes. I was on an airplane once, and I had the aisle seat, and I had just taken my seat when this older woman (who had the window seat, right next to mine) came along and said to me, ‘Move over. I want the aisle seat.’ She didn’t say please. She didn’t phrase her utterance in the form of a question. She didn’t smile. Now, I don’t know whether it’s legal to change seats like that on a commercial flight, but I wasn’t about to give up my seat for some elderly lady; I prefer the aisle seat to the window seat. But most elderly people I encounter are pretty nice. I think it might just be an antiquated, pointless tradition to treat the elderly with respect, regardless of whether or not they deserve it.

Brendan M.ParticipantI’ve known since age five or six that I was somehow different, but it wasn’t until 13 or 14 that I knew for sure that I’m gay. It varies from person to person. Some children may exhibit extreme gender nonconformity as early as 18 months, but they won’t know for sure they are gay until around puberty. Gender nonconformity, by the way, is a tendency to behave like someone of the opposite gender, and it might be an early indication that the child is gay.

Brendan M.ParticipantI am gay. I know for sure that I do not choose to be gay. I am innately gay for reasons that no one (scientists included) fully understands. I do not know whether homosexuality is genetic or whether something happens inside the mother’s womb before birth. I can only say with complete certainty that sexual orientation is innate. No offense to your religion, but the Bible is an outdated text written in archaic, unclear language by a number of different people. People are fallible. The Bible also gets mis-interpreted quite often. The Bible is not an absolute authority on anything, and it certainly isn’t explicit when it comes to the topic of homosexuality. By the way, if you think that you “choose” to be straight, I would like to hear your story. When did you “choose” to be straight? Could you change if you wanted to? I certainly couldn’t.

Brendan M.ParticipantGenerally, no. This is another myth. From what I’ve learned from my psych. course(s) in college so far, sexual orientation is unrelated to parenting and upbringing. I have always had a perfectly normal, healthy relationship with both my parents.

Brendan M.ParticipantNo. Sexual orientation is fixed and is probably determined before birth, but some people try to change it anyway. There is a chance that your friend is bisexual and doesn’t/didn’t know it, but I would be very cautious. He is probably gay, always has been, and always will be.

Brendan M.ParticipantSometimes, it just takes some time for you to find out. You haven’t given too much information to go by, but if you like boys AND girls, then you could be bisexual. (When I say ‘like,’ I mean ‘are sexually, romantically, and physically attracted to’.) A word of caution: if you come to the conclusion that you are lesbian or bisexual, don’t come out of the closet until you are ready to do so. Telling other people is a very personal decision. Make it only when you are ready.

Brendan M.ParticipantIt is a way that people are born, not a lifestyle that someone chooses. I speak from experience as a gay man: I do not choose to be gay. I have tried to be straight, and I have pretended to be straight, and it simply does not work. My sexual orientation is a part of me that nothing can — or will — ever change. The only choice in the matter (for gay/lesbian/bisexual people) is whether or not to hide one’s sexual orientation.
