They may never have been taught how to tip. A lot of people have never learned this skill, and either don't tip or grossly undertip. They may also be Afro-racists who don't tip you because you're white, but it's highly Un-PC to even think that...

Ummm.... Because they can't afford them? I mean, when you're being paid 32 cents an hour to mine the damned things, you're not really in a position to buy any.

German and Italian Americans were not treated any differently than anyone else, even after some proved to be Nazi sympathizers/stooges. There may have been some name-calling and bottle throwing, but absolutely no one advocated that they all be rounded up and herded into concentration camps.

According to the Quran, a man may take up to four wives if he can properly provide for all of them. Polygamy is illegal in the U.S., and Muslims living in the U.S. don't openly practice it. In fact, Muslims living in Muslim countries generally don't practice it a whole lot, either, owing to that 'properly provide for them' stipulation.

Thanks to Malcom X and the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton and others and their litany of hate and intolerance, a disproportionately large number of blacks, especially well-off blacks in big cities like New York and Chicago, view themselves as 'victims of racism' and all whites and Asians as 'racist oppressors,' so every accidental bump or jostle is instantly elevated from 'whoops' to 'racist assault,' and is reacted to accordingly. If you get the chance at some point, sit back and watch how these same individuals respond to being bumped or jostled by another black. You'll frequently see a huge difference in attitude. But don't comment on it. After all, that would be 'racist.'

The men you are around view you as a 'friend' not as a 'girlfriend.' It's not that they're lying, it's that the particular men you're around are looking for high-maintenance arm-candy, and view you in a 'motherly' or 'sisterly' light because of that. A lot of nice guys have the exact same problem on the distaff side. Here's the question you need to ask yourself: 'Am I only attracted to 'bad boys' who will use me and move on, and if so, why?' If you have male friends whom you view simply as 'friends' or 'male girlfriends' or 'buddies' because you tell yourself they're not your type, try reassessing them in light of being involved with a 'nice man' rather than a 'bad boy.'

Yes, it's all the Evil Planned Parenthood's fault... You're pathetic. It's sad that you hate men as much as you hate women who choose to use contraception, or for whatever reason choose to have an abortion. Contrary to what you and your fundy-wacko lesbian buddies apparently believe, Planned Parenthood is NOT in the business of peddling abortions to underage girls. Oh, by the way, in the culture I grew up in, girls were encouraged to do whatever they felt like doing, not to be 'toys' for boys. I'm really sorry your mommy and daddy didn't raise you right, but shrill harping against one of the few organizations in this country that's still willing to brave the wrath of the Bible Rapists and give accurate, balanced information about birth control is not the solution.

This is what's known as an anti-Semitic stereotype, dear. Jews have historically been portrayed by society as greedy, money-grubbing, penny-pinching, dishonest, miserly, and evil. If you are looking for an excuse to hate a group that looks essentially just like you, monetary issues are a good starting point.

Probably not, unless you're also producing pregnancy hormones. It's a specific set of hormones released in a specific order during the course of pregnancy which causes the milk glands to activate. Mechanical stimulation might eventually cause mastitis, but I have never heard of a real case of a non-pregnant woman spontaneously lactating from it.

in reply to: Nursing a dying career? #28393

My mother was a nurse for 35 years, retiring a few years ago. The biggest reasons people gave her for not going into a career in nursing were lack of respect and disproportionately low salaries. It's only fairly recently that nurses have begun to be seen as anything other than a spare pair of hands for the (presumably male) physician. For most of the last 150-odd years, female nurses were treated by the medical establishment like brainless automata, with no say in patient care, and no right to speak up or contradict a physician if they saw something wrong, but full liability if a patient was injured or died. Male nurses, in addition to this, were treated like 'failed physicians' - to wit, they 'obviously' only became nurses because they couldn't cut it as doctors. It's also only fairly recently that a nurse with 4 years of college, plus up to another 6 years of specialized graduate training, could expect to earn more per hour than the kid who bags your groceries at the local supermarket. The '90's were an especially bad time to be a nurse because of the rise of HMO's. In the HMO system, nurses became basically either file clerks with advanced degrees and a few nursing duties, because CNA's and Nurse Assistants are cheaper to hire for direct patient care, (especially if you aren't at all concerned about the quality of care your 'profit generation units' -er- patients receive), or they became 'gate keeper' telephone triage personnel whose sole job was making sure patients never actually saw a doctor. The backlash started in the late '90's, with nurses retiring or moving into other careers by the thousands, which in its turn created a severe shortage of qualified personnel, which persists right now to the point where a well-qualified nurse can essentially pick his/her job, and name his/her salary. Probably within a few years, things will level out again, because a lot of people are going through nursing school right now, but at the moment, if my mom wanted to come out of retirement, she could literally have her pick of jobs.

The short answer: That's what their parents taught them. The long answer: Thanks to the 'experts' who have controlled the conventional wisdom on child-rearing since about 1983, we have succeeded in this country in raising almost three full generations of narcisistic, egomaniacal little sociopaths who have been taught almost from birth that everything they do is permissible, as long as it makes them 'feel good about themselves.' They have never heard the word 'no', they have never been refused anything, they have never had to face the consequences of their actions, their parents (or their nannies, au pairs, etc.) have cleaned up after them every day of their lives, and they have never, ever, ever ever, (GOD FORBID!!!!!!) been punished for misbehaving, as this might hurt their precious little self-esteemie-weemies. As a result, they stop maturing emotionally somewhere in the vicinity of 'toddler', and continue reacting to the world the way a spoiled two-year-old would, well into their late teens. By now shopkeepers know better than to expect them to clean up their messes, as, should the shop owner press the issue, Mummsy and Diddy-widdy are likely to leap to Junior's defense and sue the shop owner for 'harassing' their precious widdle darling; and the average small business person can't afford to keep defending him/herself in court, even if he/she wins every time.
