AndresMemberPeople are actually divided into 4 races. You left out Australoid. They are the native peoples of India, parts of the East Indies and Malaya, some of the Pacific Islands and Australia (where the word derives) and its surrounding islands.

Hispanic only means one is a native Spanish speaker or of Spanish-speaking ancestry, like Slavic or Germanic, etc. One reason people may define themselves as ‘Hispanic’ is that most Latin Americans are of a mixed background dating back centuries, and because they have mixed to a certain degree, they were considered by Anglo-Americans to be a sort of ‘new race,’ plus they all share a similar culture and dialect. The U.S. Census calls them Hispanic/Latino as well, so that may be a factor. Lastly, yes, there are white Hispanics. Spain, Costa Rica, Argentina and Uraguay are countries where ‘white’ Hispanics are the majority.

The Chaldaeans were a Semitic people who first came into South Babylonia (now in modern Iraq) circa 1000 BC. With the death of Assurbanipal (626 BC), Nabopolassar seized the throne and control of the Babylonian Empire, which would become the Chaldean Empire. The empire flourished under Nabopolassar’s son Nebuchadnezzar II, but it declined rapidly thereafter and came to an end when Babylon fell to the Persians under Cyrus the Great in 539 BC. They developed trhe study of astronomy and astrology during this period, so “Chaldaean” came to mean simply “astrologer,” as in the book of Daniel and among the Romans. Todays Chaldeans are a Christain people living chiefly in Iraq and are more of a cultrue than a ‘race,’ so many different kinds of people in the Middle East call themselves Chaldeans. I have a friend who calls himself an Iraqi-Chaldean, and he says their culture was the first to follow Christ. In the Old Testament, Chaldean is also used to mean Aramean. Aramaic, the language of the ancient Arameans, is the first language of today’s Chaldeans.

Zack de la Rocha, who is a Chicano, was a part of the Straight Edge scene in East LA before he was in Rage Against the Machine. In the documentary in subject, he is interviewed and explains how Neo-Nazis adopted (or stole) the Skinhead/Oi culture to attract possible recruits. Someone else mentioned Bad Brains, who are black Rastafarians. There is also the Specials, who had 3 black members and 3 white members and called their record label 2-Tone for a reason. The Clash collaborated w/reggae sensation Mikey Dread and toured w/rappers Grandmaster Flash and the Treacherous Three. So punk rock is certainly not a racist thing, the original incarnation is actually quite the opposite.

A ‘mixed’ Hispanic will simply be counted as ‘Hispanic/Latino,’ but one who is clearly black, for example, will be counted as both black and Hispanic. Or one who is clearly white, will be counted as both white and Hispanic. Many racial polls do this, pretty confusing eh?

The Islamic court is probably more Orthodox and takes the Quran more literally. Bella read Deuteronomy in your Christian Bible, esp. chapter 22. Nearly every sin you can think of God commands all townspeople to stone the perpatrator(s) at the front of their Father’s home (yes, even pregnency out of wedlock). ‘In this way will you get rid of this evil,’ the verses always end. I know many say the New Testament is supposed to change all that, but many Christains dont belive that and say the Old Testament is the word of God and must be taken literally. So the Islamic court is pretty fundamental, but it certainly isnt a Muslim thing.

Your example is fine and is no more offensive than if you had said ‘The white dude is the instructor for my spin class.’ In your example, referening race serves the purpose of distinguishing him from the white guy. If both had been black and you said ‘the black guy on the right is my instructer’ that would have been different. Take this example: A white guy says to his white co-worker ‘We have a new guy starting tomorrow, he’s black,’ no purpose is served by mentioning his race. In order to tell someone there is a new person at work it is not necessary to tell you his/her race, and mentioning this makes it seem as though their race matters for some reason. Emphasizing race when there is no constructive reason to reeks of ignorance and reveals a possible prejudice. Get it?

AndresMemberColored is certainly archaic, and because the term was in use during more ‘offically’ racist times, it would be offensive. It also seems to imply that ‘colored’ isn’t normal, as though one is somehow less of a human because he or she is ‘colored.’

AndresMemberThe terms ‘Caucasion’ or ‘Cacausoid,’ like all the other races as defined, were used to describe physical characteristics and had nothing to do with skin color. Therefore, a blond, light-complected Nordic and a frizzy-haired, dark-complected Semite are both Caucasian. Today, I don’t know if it’s just in the United States, but white has become synonomous with Caucasian. Most don’t think of Mideasterners as white, and because we use Hispanic/Latino and Pacific Islander as ‘races,’ why not add Mideastern or Semitic, too? I always assumed they would be labeled Asian, but I say let them decide for themselves. I wonder what Australian Aborigines would be labeled?

Some are even friends with a few blacks at school, and act ‘down’ when around them, and then call them ‘nigger’ behind their back. I don’t get it. They also regard blacks with mistrust and as thieves, rapists and just plain violent, as well as uneducated and just about any other stereotype you can think of. I asked one why this was, and he simply said, ‘I hate niggers, but there ain’t nothin’ wrong with likin’ their music, is there?’
