I think people associate ‘proper’ talking like they do on the TV news with white people because that’s who is on TV so much. Think of how many TV newspeople are white and how many are black and how they all talk. I live in the South, and let me tell you, most white people do NOT talk like that. We aren’t all Katie Couric. Your proper voice is your professional voice–I talk way more professional in job interviews and on the phone than I do when I’m just gossiping with my family and friends. No labels necessary.

I understand about having family pressures to stay overweight. My grandmother would pressure me to eat if she thought I was getting too skinny. I had a friend who was very overweight as a kid, largely because of what she was fed at home. Also, her mom was never supportive of her losing weight when she lived at home. Finally, when she moved out, she started to diet and exercise and lost 150 lbs the healthy way. Any kind of exercise will help–any change from a non-active lifestyle will help. You could take PE classes at school if possible, or walk to school if you have that option. I had a strict upbringing, too, and you just have to learn to work around it. Take a slightly smaller portion of food at dinner, enough to not be noticed. Drink something unsweetened instead of something sweet (sweet drinks are 120 cals usually, tea or diet sodas are 0). You just have to be clever.

I think its because for many years, black people weren’t allowed the ‘opportunity’ to have opinions on anything, much less race equality. No one wants to be associated with the ignorance of racism, so no one is going to argue with a black man’s racist ideas, lest they be seen as being anti-black. Whites were able to ‘get away’ with making racist statements for those many years, and now it’s not acceptable. At some point, it won’t be acceptable for anyone.

Bragging is usually to make up for the person feeling inadequate and wanting to prove to others, and themselves, that they are somehow better than those they are talking to. My roommate was really bad about bragging about her accomplishments and stuff, but only when she was feeling insecure.

I prefer chubbier guys over thin ones. Personal preference, probably.

My brother has a malformed jaw and apparently cannot chew with his mouth shut. My husband has bad sinuses and when he’s stuffy, he will sometimes chew with an open mouth. My old roommate chewed with her mouth open, but i think it was just because she was gross.

From my black roommate: The n-word is only acceptable by black people, for black people. It is claiming a negative word to take away its power, just like a girlfriend can call me a bitch but a man can’t. No matter how it is pronounced.
