teeewalkParticipantHow incredible that you know what most whites think. Do you have a crystal ball? Did you conduct some poll on this? If not then you are demonstrating a facet of racism by using blanket statements. I know many african americans and some are confident with themselves and some are not. Who knows why for either but I’m sure it isn’t always based on just race. Why don’t you conduct a poll on this instead of presuming?

teeewalkParticipantI would bet Northern European or Scandanavian. Here are your choices: British, Irish, Scottish, German, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Belgian, Norse, Swedish, Finish or maybe Russian. Probabaly doesn’t narrow it down enough but there’s something to start with.

teeewalkParticipantIn your rebutle message you wrote: ‘The Afro-American has been stratified to the bottom of American society, and in many people’s eyes (not just whites), we are seen as sub-human simply because of the color of our skin.’ Do you really believe this? If you do then it’s no wonder you don’t feel happy. You have talked yourself out of being happy by focusing on all the negative information (or misinformation) that is being fed to you. Happiness is a choice – not a birthright. Once you realize that you might start being as happy as you presume white people are.

teeewalkParticipantMy mother-in-law (we are both white) asked me this question the other night: ‘What does it mean to you to be white?’ At first I was puzzled because I didn’t have an instant answer. Then after thinking for a while I realized that I do not define my self solely as a white person. My self definition is not centered around my race. It is not centered around my sexuality. It is not centered around the fact that I am a smoker. The phrase ‘white culture’ is a misnomer – I am Irish in decent but I am an American. I respect freedom and I respect my fellow american’s freedom no matter what they look like. As far as customs and traditions – those are passed down by families, not necessarily cultures. Even families within a culture have different customs and traditions. I personally just strive to abide by the law, work hard, continually educate myself, and be a good neighbor. I simply define my self as just a person in this world.
