I am not French but British, yet we too have a dislike for the 'Americans'. But I think it is mainly their leaders and policies, I certainly do not hate American people maybe just the idea of America in general. Perhaps from a different (older) perspective we Europeans see something in the US which we don't like. One of the main reasons I dislike the US is its refusal to join the Kyoto agreement. Plus, since the Cold War, America has strived to be the ultimate capitalist state, and over here in Europe we're a bit more socialist about these things. Also, sorry, but everyone hates George Bush.

The issue in northern Ireland was between the Catholic (who were the majority) and the protestants, a religon some what imposed on the Irish by England. There have been attrocitys by both sides as recently as a decade ago. Today the majority of Catholics live in the south (Republic of Ireland) and Protestant Northern Ireland is still part of the UK. The conflict is still very fresh in peoples minds so do be careful of what you say with regards to Christianity. I would also avoid talk about Celtic and Rangers. These are football teams however Irish people may ask which you or others which they support: Rangers are traditionally Loyalists who wish to remain part of Britian and Celtic fans wish for a 'free' Ireland. Don't worry the Irish are traditionally very friendly, just avoid these topics around the boarder (where most people were affected)and maybe in pubs.

In the UK abortions are available and free. However their is also alot of support for women who want abortions in order to make that choice. The abortion has to be agreed by 2 doctors and (although practically on demand before) it can be hard to get 2 doctors agree after about 15 weeks. The legal limit is 24 weeks. In Russia there are 3 times more abortions than live births!!!

I'm not jelous of your country (I'm British)yet Americans seem to have a certain unjustified 'swagger'seeing as their dominance of the world is coming to a end. I would say though that it is natural for people in the Middle east to feel jelous and even angry at all the West. Look at our livestlyes and compare it to theirs.
