Could it be George W. Bush? When I visited Paris Bill Clinton was in office. All those I French people I interacted with during that visit were completely disgusted that the American people were so fixated on punishing Mr. Clinton because he got a few blowjobs from someone he was not married to. Now our 'leader' is a warmonger and complete bigot: what else needs to be said?

I am not French but British, yet we too have a dislike for the 'Americans'. But I think it is mainly their leaders and policies, I certainly do not hate American people maybe just the idea of America in general. Perhaps from a different (older) perspective we Europeans see something in the US which we don't like. One of the main reasons I dislike the US is its refusal to join the Kyoto agreement. Plus, since the Cold War, America has strived to be the ultimate capitalist state, and over here in Europe we're a bit more socialist about these things. Also, sorry, but everyone hates George Bush.

The French, along with a lot of other people from other countries, dislike us because, basically, of George W. Bush. He went to war in Iraq for no plausible, decent reason. (And the reason he did have, weapons of mass destruction, was proven wrong). The French, when the U.S asked them to send soldiers, pretty much refused and disagreed with the war, and so George Bush was mad at them. He did the whole stupid 'freedom fries' thing instead of French fries (which is stupid because they're not even French), and boycott of French stuff or whatever. Which was ridiculous. So, the French dislike us because of that, and then how Iraq is in chaos now, and that Bush is making a lot of violence happen. It's not only the French, there's a lot of people in the world that hate the U.S. and Americans. Though there are lots of Americans, like myself, who disagree with Bush. there you go...an opinionated explanation.

It's not just the French, and it's not so much a dislike as it is cautious hesitation; many Americans are great, but that's too often a surprise, because the vocal lot tend to be obnoxious and self-centered. Their favorite topic of conversation is themselves, their conversational pattern is to tie not terribly insightful comments together with vacuous semantic rubbish so as to retain control of the conversation, and their superlative intonations are irritating attempts to make their rather banal comments somehow more convincing or interesting. It becomes understandable when living in America, because one sees that the only way to get anywhere is to get ugly and not let up (e.g. dealing with banks, phone companies, domestic airlines, etc), but it turns out that it doesn't have to be that way, and the natural attitude that Americans bring with them when travelling makes the average 'foreigner' want to hide.
