I don't know about other white people but I grew up with images such as Different World, etc... which focused on college students that weren't fornicating weed smokers. Most of the shows today, even ER, have room for strong black characters who are massively educated - so perhaps your own viewing is limited. Also, King and Malcolm were not 'on the same page' - Separatist Agency and Integration are hardly both against 'white ideology'. Your question implies that this (educated blackmanaphobia) has been an issue for you yet you seem unaware of the purposes and goals of even these two heroes.

Keep in mind that presentation and emphasis is part of this - and the African aesthetic of beauty which is still followed unconsciously by many African Americans emphasizes curves and size. SO what may be a marginally big butt is not hidden or liposuctioned away but is shown and displayed as a good thing.

Straight and gay and bi are inaccurate labels to describe the huge range of sexual reactions humans have, even in their own lifetime. We are not simply one thing at all times, for our entire lives. As you surmised, context (the when and where) are huge factors. After all, sex is sex, so when you are 'turned on,' your brain is thinking SEX without the social clutter and filters that tell you certain types are wrong. Since you have noticed this difference between your aroused and normal states, you should try to figure out the source of these 'filters' that tell you that at normal times this is disgusting when your own body tells you otherwise. Try to remove some of this social programming and you will expand your humanity.

The reply about the eurocentric standards of beauty are right on the mark. Also, keep in mind that this shows that Blacks see and describe each other accurately as individuals, while whites generally see Blacks as simply a monolithic Black. The ability to see the differences in color and features is something white s have to learn. This 'pecking order' of color has been in all American media - even Black Cinema. see htpp://astro.temple.edu/public_html/cc.htm

You have the cart before the horse. The need for hyphenated identities is caused, in part, by the fact that those who are not some kind of white american are not TREATED as simply Americans but as Black, Latino, Asian, etc... besides there are huge cultural differences in these types of Americans (language, dress, food, religion) - there is no one type of american. So you should spend more thought on ways to make sure all people are treated as simply 'Americans' and that might remove this symptom of identity in a biased society. I do agree, however, that the proper term for African Americans should be American-Africans, since they are primarily, first and foremost, Africans living in America (cultural orientation as primary identifier with national locator as the qualifier).
