I wanted to be doing the adventuring bit that the boys’ toys rated. I had a chemistry set, and a microscope. This was the best thing my folks could have done for me. I hated being shunted into girls’ games on the playground… not that they wanted me, either. I knew as a very small child I never wanted to get married and have children; not my road this lifetime. Yet that’s all the girls’ toys steer us toward. Baby dolls, E-Z Bake ovens, and Barbie. My mother worked hard to make sure I was not trapped in marriage like she was, that I knew I had options beyond being a brood sow and slave. Young ladies wearing gloves in public? I’m surprised you’d allow them to be seen in public.

Neither of us object to this arrangement. Technically this constitutes an affair, although neither of us consider it so. An affair involves lying, and there is no lying involved in my marriage. He would be upset if I were seeing men, but I have no interest in that; my husband will give me anything I want from a man. He just can’t be a woman. He is sensitive and loves to talk to me. We do not agree about everything, which keeps us interested in each other.

There are plenty of white folks (and I’m sure Asian, and Indian, etc) out there who are just as religious to balance this equation, so I don’t think it’s a question of how devout the communities are, more a difference of style. In my life, divinity plays a far more important role than I had ever thought it could, but it doesn’t show to the outside world.

For those of us attracted to our own gender, this is normal. Being with a man is abnormal, and in a huge way. Maybe not normal for you, but as far as I live my life, I don’t really care what’s normal for you, that’s for you to figure out. I know what’s normal and right for me, and that’s how I live my life. My husband’s girlfriend, who is very very straight, and somewhat feminine, in that she wears skirts, rarely wears make up at all. I’m a bisexual woman involved in an open marriage. This doesn’t show on the outside, I have to trust someone enough to tell them, but nonetheless, my situation is not commonly encountered.

I love my country, and I want to see her strong and proud, and as good as she can be. I will criticize my leaders, if I think they are doing the wrong thing for my country. It is also in not allowing outsiders to speak badly of her. I am proud of being a citizen of the United States. I am happy to be able to speak my mind, without fear of ‘disappearing in the night’. Enforced conformity is against the spirit of our nation.
