I pretty much agree with the responses you've received. You might wonder : How did Americans' culture drift so far from Europe's? After all, the United States started as European colonies. I think the difference is that many (most?) of those colonies were founded by religious fanatics. The 'work ethic' is part of our heritage from that era. I've seen polls of American workers that say workers would prefer more time off, even if their wages dropped, but they don't have that option. Maybe we will become more European over time.

For people who are religious (something not in my nature), maybe they need to latch onto something to believe. It is easier, I suppose, to believe in a formal religion with lots of social support. Maybe it is like imprinting a duckling, and has to happen at the right time in development. By the way, I don't think most people are as extreme in their opinion of ghost-believers as you imply.

Could you be referring to White Supremicists who think the whaite 'race' is 'chosen'? But there are so few of them. There may have been a time during the heigth of the British Empire's 'white man's burden' when Europeans thought their extensive conquests meant they were a special breed. But that was a long time ago. Can the mind-set really survive in modern America? I am white and I dont feel that way. But you must see it around you. What behaviors lead to your observation?

I married into a Jewish family. My in-laws are all 'working' people, including teachers, retail sales people, travel agents, and small business people. I grew up in a town with a large Jewish community that included prison guards and grocers as well as doctors and real-estate developers of Jewish faith. I suspect that, if you look around in your own life and not just at who is in the news (the media cover the exceptions after all) you will find most Jewish people are like most non-Jewish people.
