I masturbate. A lot. I live in a dorm room with one other person, and we have the public bathroom thing. When I first got here, that was a problem for me, too. Well, my roommate knows that I do it. I admit it openly to people most of the time (it actually turns a lot of guys cranks, which is good for me). It's really easy to hide it when you don't have to move all that much. Just go slowly or stick with one area or something. I wouldn't suggest using a vibrator. It's a little hard to convince a roommate that you're brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush at 10 p.m. Do it in the shower if you have separate stalls, and make sure it's blatantly obvious that you're in there so that people don't walk in on you.

Ebonics is simply a dialect of English. It doesn't mean you're stupid or lazy. Sadly, people tend to consider 'intelligent English' to be either English with an English dialect, or 'Chicago English.' I mean, does a Southern accent sound particularly intelligent? That doesn't mean people from the south are stupid, it means they grew up speaking a different way. As for grammar... bad grammar really grates on my ears. Ebonics often does have bad grammar. But really, I don't know any 'white' English dialect in which everybody uses excellent grammar, either. I mean, look at the Internet!

In some places, circumcision (and in some cases, subincision) are done as a puberty rite. One reason is because this is a painful, shaking experience, and when you share that experience with so many other people, it tends to scare you into submission. You are a part of the group, because you all went through the same thing. This isn't the same as when people do it here. Circumcision on males is usually done for cosmetic purposes, because of the myth that it keeps men 'cleaner,' or because people just think it's the way a penis is supposed to be. Hence, it is done during infancy when people aren't as likely to remember the pain. Women here sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) are circumsized later in life, by their own free will, again for cosmetic purposes.

in reply to: Why advertise sexual orientation? #30643

Those of us who are straight do advertise it, generally. We do it by hitting on people of the opposite sex, expressing relationships in terms of 'boyfriend/girlfriend' and 'husband/wife,' and other ways that you don't even notice. Consider how many guys get their left ear pierced. That is a symbol saying that they are heterosexual. Actually, I once seriously flirted with a guy, very much flaunting my heterosexuality to him, without having the slightest clue that he was gay! But for those that do 'advertise,' there is a reason for them to do it. When you're homosexual, it's not quite as easy to find a date than it is for those of us on the other half. Hell, just asking somebody out could get you beaten up if you ask the wrong people. So showing people that you are gay could kind of 'coax people out' so it's easier to find somebody who -won't- beat you up.

It's never 'appropriate.' Words like that are very hurtful. What's even worse is that most people, I'm guessing, -do- use it when they think nobody's watching.

I've personally found that a lot of black people prefer to be called black now. After all, we are 'white.' And not all black people are from Africa, there are populations in Australia and Asia where people are dark-skinned. What about those who immigrated from there? We can't very well call them 'African American.'

Yup, blind people do have dreams. In fact, everybody dreams. If you didn't dream, you'd go absolutely insane. It's something your mind needs. I don't think people who have been blind from birth dream -images,- because there have been people who are blind from birth, get an operation to gain sight, and are unable to function with that sight because they haven't developed it. They do hear and feel in their dreams though, just as we do.

I have something to say about this, it kind of goes along with the other person who replied to this. Africa is a very big place. Therefore, it's unreasonable to expect that they all conform to the same ideas and beliefs. I also would like to say that I don't see this having anything to do with skin color, because to many black people who live in Africa, black people in other countries are -not- African. It's not only an issue of skin color. I just think your idea is pretty idealized.

For the same reason some women prefer to be on top and some on the bottom for heterosexual couples. It's just a matter of taste. Some guys like being the ute, some like being the beme. Hey, some straight guys like being the socket, too! So it's not really simple enough to be put in one post.
