Danny HarbisonParticipantPart of the problem is that until The Cosby Show came along, we had whole generations raised on sitcoms where the kids were smarter than the adults. The parents were raised with that idea and now they let their kids get away with it. I have two sons and both answer adults with sir and ma’am and know better than to talk back. Of course they also live in Eastern Kentucky where it’s still safe to be a kid.

Danny HarbisonParticipantThis is a misconception that has been put out there by the left in their attempt to engender class warfare. You are not lucky. You have done the things you needed to do to get where you are. You have gotten the education and skills you need. You’ve worked long hours and have made sacrifices to get where you are. I grew up what can be best described as poor white trash. I decided I wanted out of that situation and have done the same things. I don’t consider myself lucky, and I consider those who do consider me lucky as being victim wannabes.

Danny HarbisonParticipantI too am a teacher in Georgia and am fighting the same battle. I think a lot of it comes from the sixties, seventies, and eighties. We created a culture of the victim. Starting the seventies we turned on teachers and started blaming teachers for children’s poor performance. It’s easier than to accept the responsibility that WE are responsible for what kind of education we get. Those parents learned to blame the schools for their failure. (I had a boyfriend that once blamed the school for not teaching him all he needed in one breath. In the next, he told me that he didn’t read books.) Now that they are parents, they have decided to simply say, ‘it’s the teacher’s fault’ that my kid is doing poorly, not his and not mine. Danny

Danny HarbisonParticipantEver think that maybe he’s lonely ore bored at home and that work is a place where there are people and he feel’s comfortable? He may just be spending his days enjoying people watching.

Danny HarbisonParticipantA lot of this comes from European prejudices. Europeans distrusted the Roma (Or Cegani as my students are known) and when they came to this country they brought that prejudice with them. Even the non-Cegani Bosnian refugees in my school see the the Cegani as being beneath them. Interestingly enough, I think that many Americans would be surprised to find that with the possible exception of certain Asian groups, we actually DO bathe more than most other cultures (note I didn’t say race). Continental Europeans especially.

Danny HarbisonParticipantREally. In college I was a member of the Bere College Country Dancers, a group that helped revive and reconstruct Appalachian and European folk dancing. The father of my best friend back home was a Baptist Deacon who was convinced I was sinning because I was dancing. Remember the old joke about why Baptists don’t have sex standing up: They’re afraid that people might think they’re dancing. Danny

Danny HarbisonParticipantI hate to break it some folks but it IS considered rude to have a conversation in a language that all others present can’t speak. To switch from English to another language when someone else approaches is a concious effort to be rude. Danny

Danny HarbisonParticipantI’m very fair skinned white but teach in a predominately African-American school. Everytime I blow my nose, or sneeze, my face turns very red and without fail my students are always amazed by this. It’s simply a matter of blood going to the extremities due to an increased heart rate.

Danny HarbisonParticipantI’m a gay elementary school teacher. It teach in Atlanta Georgia. I’m out of the closet to the faculty and to some parents, but not to my students. It’s just not a subject I discuss with a ten year old. Kids however are not stupid. One of my classes once figured it out and told me it was okay. They told me that for a while they thought I was dating our coach but then figured I had better taste than that. Danny

Danny HarbisonParticipantEver heard of Freaknik here in Atlanta. It’s now defunct, but it was Black College Spring Break held here for years. The running joke was that during Freaknik it wasn’t unusual to have people simply get out of their cars in gridlock at rushhour and have sex on the hoods of the car. It’s not just a white thing.
