I believe in open-minded education on both sex and responsibility. Young people are still afraid to ask their parents, and parents are still reluctant to "go into detail" on the subject of sex. With sex comes responsibility of all degrees. Some schools had a good start when they had teens take the "flour sack" babies home. When my daughter was 15, I borrowed my son's newborn for the weekend. My daughter got to be "mom" from 3 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday. It put a heck of a cramp in her movie date and sleep. She is now 38 with three young teenagers of her own and a good husband. The solution to teen pregnancies is avoidance by openness, honesty, understanding, non-judgmental communication, education, compassion and a little creativity.

I have made it a practice to only make an appointment in the first office hour. When this has not been possible and necessity warrants, I allow half an hour past my appointment time. If the doctor (dentist, lawyer, etc.) has not been in personal contact with me, I tell the receptionist that my time is valuable and I will be sending a bill for the half hour of my wasted time. I have yet to send a bill, but my statement usually goes through the office 'grapevine' and I get considerably better response time from then on.

The United States retaliated against Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. It was already a 'declared' war when U.S. personel were attacked. This does not make it right; it makes it different. I always considered history a 'sucky' subject, but if you take the time to learn about it and then associate it to the personal level of your day-to-day interactions, especially when you 'think' someone has done you wrong, you will begin to assimilate how intolerance breeds hate, creating conflict, unrest, retaliation or aggression. Stand up tall for what you believe in, but do not deny others the right to stand up for their beliefs.

Most people feel they need a 'religion' to tell them what to 'believe' in order to be 'saved.' Religion seems to connotate church attendence, thus believing the church's interpretation of the Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon or whatever. With 50 years of church attendence of almost every 'mainline' denomination behind me, I am convinced there is only one thing right for me: I am spiritual and believe in a 'higher power.' I believe that higher power gave me a conscience. I don't need to believe what anyone tells me, written or spoken. What matters is and as it should be, in one's heart.

Webster's definition No. 3 of 'fetish': "An object whose real or fantasized presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification." Don't stress over words. If you find tickling fun and your partner is agreeable, then just enjoy. It is no more perverted than having to have dessert to make a meal seem complete.

We all want to look our best, and at our age (over 50) most of us have come to the conclusion that 'we can't please everybody, so we please ourselves.' If you love him, don't ask him to change. If you don't love him, why should he change for you? Love him for who he is on the inside. My 'combed-over' husband also wears tan shorts, white socks and a gray shirt on a typical trip to the store. I try laying out matching clothes, but when he says 'these are good enough,' I just smile and put my selections back in the closet.

I agree with Mary's response. Affirmative action has made businesses nervous. What a shame that people seek every opportunity to 'sue' to gain something for nothing more then hurt feelings. What ever happened to 'the best person qualified'? I guess prejudice got in the way of good sense on both ends of the spectrum. White Man's Burden, a movie from some time ago with John Travolta, is worth watching. It could make a white boss really take a new perspective of his own character.

To me the obvious answer is for continuity and to do a better job. Few 'criminals' begin their careers as adults. Being familiar with both systems of incarceration and all age ranges can be of benefit as an additional protective measure for the jailor. I was never a 'jailor' but I housed 3 adult parolees (in their 30's)and 22 juvenile offenders (12 to 18 years old -Petty theft to a 13 year old murder). You can't get too much training and education when it comes to avoiding being outsmarted.
