pissedkittyMemberI had the same experience 3 years ago. I went to India to be married. The things that stand out for me are: close your eyes when they drive. It’s terrifying and there are few road laws. Don’t show your armpits and don’t try to stare men down when they stare at you. Here it works to make them back down, but there they can stare longer than you can. There is something called ‘eve teasing,’ when men will harass you on the street. Some Indian women carry stickpins with them to poke rude men. Holding your hands in a prayer stance and saying NAMASTE when you meet elders is nice, and perhaps expected. Carry some tissues with you because the bathroom is not like ours. A lot of women don’t even use public restrooms and would rather wait to go home. Travel is exhausting. And if you have a layover in a Muslim counrty, be particularly discreet and proper. I got yelled at by a military airport security person for sitting cross-legged in a seat. The family will almost interview you, even though your man has already chosen you. Hang in there. My Indian man was certainly worth the trouble and I suspect yours is, too.

pissedkittyMemberI’m also a fat chick and understand the issue of manufacturers being narrow-minded, but I actually think some old people do like it, and here’s why: I bid on Ebay a lot and see clothes like that being bid on and sold. Someone has to be buying it, right? I also think a lot of times when you get really old, your perspective changes and you start wearing colors that make you happy instead of giving a damn what anyone else thinks. I’m sure people see me on the beach and think, ‘Why does that whale show herself in a bathing suit?’ When I was young and thin, I never would have done this. But now, being happy and having fun means worlds more than what anyone thinks.

pissedkittyMemberI was also an outcast in school, and people treated me like a loser. I could almost understand why those kids did what they did. And I also thought of who I would have shot. But when I was young in school and thought of retaliation, I only wondered who I would slap if I could. We’ve come a long way in our ideas about what satisfying revenge would look like. Incidentally, even the school guidance counselor told my mother I would never do or be anything, and so far I’ve earned a master’s degree.

pissedkittyMemberWhen i was a kid, my father wouldn’t admit to anyone that he was from a reservation in Oklahoma. He would agree with whatever anyone would assume he might be. He passed himself off as Greek, Italian, etc. He said Indians were savages. That was really sad to me.
Now times have changed. I would love to see what he would claim now if he were still alive. I don’t bother telling anyone I am half Cherokee because so many people say that now that it’s become a fad. I don’t think I have any friends who don’t claim to be at least some small fraction of some tribe.

pissedkittyMemberI have often found that cat people are often chosen by cats, who know instinctively that they are generous pushovers. My husband and I love all animals, but I am partial to cats. I am culturally white, and he is Asian. Before we married we used to have play arguments about whether cats or dogs were better. After he moved in, he really came to love these cats. I think anyone who is genuinely kind likes animals. People think that cats are aloof, but really cats return to you what you show them. I have five very affectionate cats. That’s because they’re talked to, played with and sung to. Cats are more asthetically pleasing to look at. Artistic people probably favor cats because they are more asthetically pleasing to the eye.

pissedkittyMemberi am fat and im a vegetarian. i dont eat meat, eggs, fish, etc. when people ask ‘what DO you eat?’ i ask ‘do i look underfed to you?’ i actually dont overeat at all. sometimes i forget to eat. but i do have polycystic ovary disease which causes a lot of extra weight. if i really want to starve, i can get down to being much less fat, but im still fat. ironically, one doctor diagnosed me with bulemia without even asking or discussing it with me. she assumed i must be like this because i gorge myself with food. not all doctors understand endocrine disorders.

pissedkittyMemberThis has been a topic of discussion at my house. I’M an American with a relatively weak stomach. My husband is from a culture where many bodily functions are handled differently. He farts really loud at home and burps at the table. It’s really true that Asians consider burping a compliment. Anyway, he rarely says ‘Excuse me,’ and I often feel sick. I’ve realized that a lot of it is psychological because if he does say ‘excuse me’ I suddenly feel better, as if the acknowledgement somehow cancels it out. Then I can go on eating.

pissedkittyMemberthere are several ways to work with children in psychology. if you do therapy, you would mainly do play therapy and family work. sometimes you would do therapy groups. a job would run 371/2 to 40 hours. you would work a lot with children in state custody and foster homes. you would be required to testify in court. theres a lot of paperwork. if youre really committed and dont take very good care of yourself, you could work a whole lot more. there is also psychological testing, where you would spend several hours with each child/family. if you want to be a therapist, i would recommend social work programs. most insurance companies will pay for sw’s and not psychologists anymore. also people prefer that you generalize. also dont have any illusions that people working in this field are all emotionally healthy. đ

pissedkittyMemberi feel there is religion, spirituality and then something else. i cant define that last thing but all of the above implies a respect for something outside ourselves. god is really a relative term which more people have made into a human likeness. ‘god’ or the universe or whatever is unlikely to be like a human. maybe it is simply the force of nature, and so there it is: undenyable. i think that its inflexible to say that anyone has to believe in god to be anything. you were raised a christian and you sound like you participate in some of that lifestyle. i think it takes courage and progressive thinking to not limit yourself to other people’s definitions. think for yourself! thats where your truth really is.

pissedkittyMemberi was picked on relentlessly as a kid and was way too shy to ever stick up for myself. i can remeber times in my life later when i saw others get picked on and i did nothing. i can remember every single time. i had to learn how to take care of myself before i could start to stand up for others. i do it all the time now and am labeled a bitch for it. its the price you pay. but im happier. if i had to do it all again, i realize that i really had nothing to lose by standing up for myself then. i wouldnt have resorted to violence but i would have protected myself no matter what else that took.

pissedkittyMemberwhen christianity was trying to take over as both a religious and political power, scaring people about pagan gods was effective. the horned god, some think of as pan, was a good selection to identify as devilish (horns, cloven hoofs, etc) some say it is the actual forerunner of the archetypal satan we think of today. soon, any earth based healer was being burned as a witch. those were often the same people who had previously served as the shamans of their communities. christians also chose to celebrate their holidays at the same time as pagan festivals as a way to infiltrate and win people over. for example, easter was eostar depicted by a goddess with bunnies and eggs at her feet. its a fascinating history that you should read into. blessed be!

pissedkittyMembermen uncut definitely have better sensitivity. i enjoy that a lot more than anything else. i dont buy the health reasons, if youre clean. and i dont think cutting is natural. i have a son who i wouldnt have cut either. i think its barbaric.

pissedkittyMemberi think all comedy is funny. i love all jokes-racial, religious, gender, ect. i am biracial and in an interacial marriage. we watch the black channel and comedy central. i never percieve commedians as being malicious. the jokes are often steriotypical, but they all have a grain of truth in them, too. i think laughing about any differences breaks the ice, increases communication and loosens tension. i also think it increases some level of understanding. i think people have become too politically correct, sesitive or guilt ridden to be natural with their own impulses.

pissedkittyMemberlike all people, there are well intended ones, and control freaks. i have the misfortune/fortune of working regularly with them and have had a mix of good to horrific experiences. there really are cases where they do rip families apart and when they work along their own agenda. some of them lie, try to control therapy for victims, and actively sabotage family’s chances for getting back together. sometimes they ride high on the power and threaten people. one i have recently been working with has tried to get me fired for speaking up about unethical behavior. that system can be so corrupt. on the other hand, some have saved children’s lives. i wouldnt want to do the job and if i could i would avoid working with that system altogether.

pissedkittyMemberi truly believe that its a historical issue that has become part of black culture. the anger in their culture now is a natural backlash after years of oppression. its racial baggage and i dont think it will be permanent. people who say ‘they’ should ‘just get over it’ havent experienced what they have. all cultures have baggage. the deeper the pain, the longer the healing will take.
