Racism or comedy?

While watching cable, I saw an African-American comedian doing the tired ‘black people (something cool) but white people (something uncool).’ He went on about how he stopped to watch if a white man was getting cuffed, and would mock him. I then noticed it was a black man speaking to a black audience, and thought that a white man mocking blacks to other whites would be called a racist. While white people have done this same thing in the past, we usually cringe when we see it today. When is this comedy, and when is it racism?

I don’t have the answer, but for the record, I’m sick of this kind of comedy, too. If you have to insult someone else to make yourself feel better, which is what I suspect is at the root of this type of comedy, you are really letting them control you.

It is only racism if white people make fun of black people. It’s wacked is what it is. Watch BET; that’s all they do is talk bad about white people, and it’s supposed to be OK. That p***es me off.

Please give me a break. I hear white comedians all the time making fun of black celebrities. Have you ever listened to Jay Leno, Letterman and Dennis Miller? You people are becoming so sensitive. Don’t you remember that you are the superior race?

i think all comedy is funny. i love all jokes-racial, religious, gender, ect. i am biracial and in an interacial marriage. we watch the black channel and comedy central. i never percieve commedians as being malicious. the jokes are often steriotypical, but they all have a grain of truth in them, too. i think laughing about any differences breaks the ice, increases communication and loosens tension. i also think it increases some level of understanding. i think people have become too politically correct, sesitive or guilt ridden to be natural with their own impulses.

Haven’t you heard the jokes made about Michael Jackson, O.J. Simpson, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, do I need to go on? Plus its a fact that if you’re around whites long enough they will slip and make a racist joke forgetting that you’re there.

Well, I’ve heard them make fun of specific black celebrities, just the same as they make fun of specific white celebrities. Never once have they made fun of the entire black race. Can you imagine the reaction if Letterman did that? There would be an outrage! He would instantly become labeled a racist (justifiably). Popular culture does not relate to or approve of jokes against black people (as a group), thus, it would reject him. I think racism is racism, regardless of who it is directed at. That’s not oversensitivity, that’s calling something what it is.

It is a case of dish but can’t take. It is easier to be weak than strong, thus the weak outnumber the strong. Wimps find it OK for the little dog to bark at the big dog because that favors themselves. Blacks poking fun at whites is accepted because it is a joke. The majority accepts it because the weak stick together. When you pick on the strong, it’s a joke, but when the big kid teases the little kid, everyone feels sorry for him. Until blacks build rockets and computers, etc., i.e. until they pull their weight in history-making inventions and discoveries equally to whites, they will always be considered the little kid. (Note: I’m just saying how I think the masses take it, not myself.)

as a white guy, i enjoy hearing what other cultures have to say about whites… i think that we can learn from what they say… at the same time, i am never offended because i don’t take myself too seriously… i don’t feel that i am above criticism as a white guy… so, i would recommend just enjoying what others say about whites and share a few laughs with them… who knows, maybe it’ll make you think…
