A lot of older Americans, especially those with parents who lived through WWII were taught this doctrine of American Exceptionalism that now most people view as a form of bigotry. But, habits die hard and folks still think that our lifestyle (big cars, cheap gas, mass consumerism and unilateral intervention internationally) is a birth right for beating the Axis powers. Happens all the time, but less so now that medical technology is better. Unless the man in question was fasting, sweating, working out to lose weight (as a boxer or wrestler might), chances are he was just sitting on a time bomb that finally went off.

Most gays people don’t care what you think. It’s only when you start agitating and passing laws against them that they get righteously pissed. And, what is their “lifestyle choice”? My gay friends range from unattached young party boys to middle-aged, married lesbians with children. There is no one “gay lifestyle”.

Whereas if you have a decent career going, you could get a mate at any point in life. Ergo, women who don’t pair up prior to 40 often end up alone. So we have to be more decisive about these things. Also, any woman who wants children will want to find a responsible parenting partner before she’s 35 or so.

And NO my children are not considered Jewish by the more hardline Orthodoxy of the faith. Thankfully most Reform Jews are less bigoted about these things. As an African-American it may interest you to know that Michelle Obama has a cousin who is a rabbi.

Even Israelis now are realizing that Zionism, not Judaism is the cause of a lot of the trouble. There are organizations inside Israel that lobby against the behavior of their nation. If only Americans were so motivated.

Jews represent one of the most successful minorities in my city. They are disproportionately represented in my professional field and kissed up to more than discriminated against. So it probably depends on where you’re living. Here there is certainly no widespread discrimination against Jews (Mel Gibson notwithstanding).

And bitching that you can’t afford to raise a family or have a decent life on minimum wage. Some jobs aren’t meant to be careers. They are for students, part timers and the elderly to make a few extra bucks. If you want to earn a real living, you will need some form of higher education, and you can’t even get into vocational training without a GED. Why set your goals so low? It’s sad.

The Hassidim’s wardrobe choices have more to do with their Eastern European background than anything in Jewish law. Just as the fez that is de rigueur at Sephardic Moroccan weddings is not a Jewish thing per se. The tribes spread out all over the world and each community in turn took on the cultural norms of the place it was living.

Where the public schools have a 50% drop out rate and the majority of Latino kids openly tell the newspapers that they regard education as something “the man” is trying to inflict upon them. We have crappy schools in the Southland. This is just a fact. Teachers who don’t care but are protected by a powerful union. Activists who would prefer a large, uneducated and angry mob in order to push their agenda instead of thoughtful, knowledgeable young people ready to take on the mantle of leadership. Break the mold, get an education and be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Older people, especially the very old with memories of the Depression would never use credit because that’s what got us into that trouble (sound familiar). My husband and I use credit cards almost exclusively because it makes things easier for our respective accountants. We do pay everything off every month though. There is no good excuse to pay loads of interest to these nearly criminal card companies. There used to be usury laws in this country. Thank you, Ronald Reagan…

Within the past few hundred years anyway, which in the 4000 years or so of Jewish mythology makes it modern. Like so many interpretations of religious text it was merely the capriciousness of man. A rabbi reputedly started this ball rolling because he felt the flock wasn’t sacrificing enough. Rabbis now are trying to create a new listing for “Ethically Kosher” food, meaning that those workers producing it are treated well, have health benefits, etc. In other words kosher meat will become so expensive that only a few can afford it. The only sensible way to keep kosher in the modern world is to be a vegetarian. You will find that most younger Jews who care about dietary laws simply don’t eat meat at all.
