DotMemberDuring WWII the fighting units were segregated and I think most people know that. So unless the film was highlighting the “Buffalo Soldiers” or some other “colored” brigade you wouldn’t necessarily see a lot of minorities (Asians and others were also subject to these rules). Korea and Vietnam were different and I’m curious as to which films you’re talking about where blacks were portrayed as out of control. I can’t think of any. However, the actual reason you don’t see many minorities starring in mainstream films is that there are very few studio development execs (of any race) who believe they can “fill seats”. While there are a few like Denzel who can headline a film, you will generally see minority actors in “supporting” roles. Given that “Hollywood” is in L.A., a city that’s

DotMemberMost “black” films are made by black directors, usually using scripts by black writers. They are attempting, I think, to speak to what they see as the “black experience”. As for all whites living in Beverly Hills… These are some Oscar nominees from recent years. I didn’t see many wealthy whites in any of them. No Country for Old Men Gone Baby Gone The Departed Little Miss Sunshine Brokeback Mountain North Country Walk the Line History of Violence Transamerica Million Dollar Baby Mystic River Cold Mountain Chicago You get the point… As they say, in American most rich people are white, but most white people are NOT rich.

DotMemberI have struggled my whole life with a “hick” accent. It has held me back professionally, it has made me less confident when dealing with the city folk around me. I lived in Britain where they are generally appalled by the state of American English. I will make sure my kids can speak American English correctly. Communication skills are the most important thing a person can possess. I blame slang, TV, pop culture, IMing and the general tendency to blend languages, i.e. Spanglish, Chinglish and the thirty other non-languages being spoken in my city. A typical high school student from 1920 would not be able to understand the average American today. This is sad.

DotMemberWe’ve come up against this, my husband is a somewhat “other” and always checks that box when he bothers at all. In this world where both public and private agencies of all kinds are constantly being accused of racial and gender bias, I’m sure they collect this information in an attempt to prove that they don’t discriminate. Whether they do or not we will probably never know. I personally think the US is more classist than racist anyway.

DotMemberWhile some people can carry off long hair for life, most women cannot. Faces grow thinner, so does hair… Gray hair is frizzy and difficult to manage. Hair color, for covering said gray, damages the hair so it doesn’t grow out long and nice. Whilst the same style for all is not a good thing, having thinning, ratty, frizzy hair that’s gray at the roots and overly dyed at the ends isn’t either. Finding a style and color that works as they get older is something most women don’t put enough thought into. I also think that as you age you tend to care a little less about looking cute. Seriously, once you’re a grandma are you going to want to put the extra effort into keeping long hair (which is a major hassle for some people)? And PS, I know older black and Latino women who feel the s

DotMemberDavid, you live in L.A. Have you not noticed that half the accidents on the road are Latino males, usually driving something that wouldn’t pass a DMV inspection? You must do all your driving west of the 405.

DotMemberThey’re asserting their native cultural identity to let you know that English-speaking Americans are dwindling in numbers. I can handle it in the outside world. I have relatives who do this to me in my own house. THAT is rude.

DotMemberI live in one of the worst school districts in the country. The parents here claim that they’re too busy working to properly care for their children’s educations. That doesn’t even take into consideration the huge number of absentee fathers in some poor communities. Until people learn to practice hands-on parenting, which includes not having more kids than you can manage, we will have inner city schools filled with apathetic and disruptive kids. It’s so unfair to those poorer kids who really do want an education and really do have the potential to do well.

DotMemberSomeone with Judeo-Christian beliefs might say because He also gave us free will to sin or be righteous. Given that religion is a man-made construct, I would say that this is simply one of the many inconsistencies. This is why it’s difficult for rational people to believe in god, hell or heaven for that matter.

DotMember“I’m sure they wonder why we spend so much time putting on makeup and doing our hair.” They do, because they have NO idea how much effort it takes to look “natural”. Men bitch about the time and money spent on appearance but ask one if he’d ever date a girl who DIDN’T do all that stuff.

DotMemberVery few educated, middle-class Mexican men would pinch or wolf whistle a passing female. Conversely I have been harassed by construction workers of all races. I would suggest your experience has more to do with the fact that most construction workers these days are Latino than that non-Latino working class American men have a sudden respect for women. Female equality seems to be a luxury only the more comfortable classes can afford. Incidentally, MOST foreign countries do not have the same kind of anti-sexual harassment laws we do in the states.

DotMemberUnless you’re talking about the elderly (who may have trouble bathing), it’s likely that whites use more hair and body care products than other races. Partly due to more disposable income and partly because they are targeted by advertisers… I bet an average person has about five different products on him/her on a given day. That could smell funny. Right now I smell like shampoo, hair gel, face cream, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste and laundry detergent, and I haven’t even put any make up on yet.

DotMemberFirst off, “Oriental” is about as offensive as “colored” when it’s used to describe people. Secondly, if you choose to hang with bimbos, you’re going to get blather about shoes and celebrities. Go to a Mensa meeting, join a book club or sign into a chat room about politics… I’ve heard this complaint from so many guys only to find that they’re talking about women who LOOK like teenage mall rats. Of course very young, very cute girls talk nonsense. Very young, very cute boys do the same. Mature women with educations and careers don’t talk like this. It’s just that too many guys like David want either little girls or subservient housewife types.

DotMemberI live in a place where the mere mention of the millions of illegal immigrants that bankrupted the city is considered “racist”. Most rational people wouldn’t consider that true racism but it doesn’t stop activists from using the word. Is it racist for certain groups to insist that their children marry people of the same religion or cultural background? I would say probably. Some would say not. The word “racism” is tossed around with far too much ease these days. As I have said to a black friend, “ask your grandparents about real racism”. It isn’t just some idiot looking funny at you while you have the full rights of any citizen. No American under the age of 40 has likely ever experience the authentic, institutionalized racism that used to exist here. The problem now is a matter o
