The right-wingers in the U.S. Congress and many, not all, churches have tried to say that when same-sex civil marriages were permitted in several Scandinavian countries, marriage rates and such declined and their societies fell to pieces. They were almost completely wrong. Marriage rates were already on the decline, and they actually went up following their recognition of marriage for every citizen. We want to be a part of this very ‘conservative’ marriage ideal. Denying us the right to get some of the benefits afforded straight couples also deinies it to our children. There are millions of same-sex families in the United States, and they are the ones being punished because of ignorance in the name of religion (which I thought our government was supposed to stay out of). We have always been around and we will always be around. It’s your choice to let us sit at the table or not. You condemn us for being promiscuous, and the moment we want to commit monogamously, you say ‘no way.’ In a Democratic society of the people, all should be welcome.

Yes, but not all gay men do. Many people believe this sexual act contributes to the ‘icky’ feeling that most people get when thinking about gay marriage, which is most unfortunate. IS having sex with someone of the opposite gender the only reason that straight folk get married? I hope not. It is certainly not the only reason I want to marry my partner.

Who we classify as gay men and women, a number of Native American cultures call ‘two-spirit’ people, because they have the spirit of both male and female in them. Because of this duality (‘in touch with their feminine side’ as we say for many gay men), they often held very special, sometimes revered positions in their tribes. I guess their cultures understood much earlier than ours that we are pretty fabulous.

Oh, honey, it is NOT a habit. If it were, you could change, too, if the person of the same gender got close to you. People CAN choose what to do about their sexuality – they can deny it or follow it. We know that denial does not just lead you down a river in Egypt, but to depression, anxiety, bad relationships, suicidal feelings or the Catholic priesthood.

Wearing poly-blend clothes is the same abomination as a man sleeping with another man according to the Bible, a sin often punishible by death. So is eating shrimp. Sitting in a chair after a woman who is having her period sits in the chair is also forbidden, but then she is supposed to be sequestered during that time anyway. Jesus Christ never once said that people we call gay today are bad. Perhaps a single, Jewish man in his early thirties who had almost exclusively other single men in his inner circle of companions best not say anything bad about gay people anyway. 🙂 And I am only saying this partly tongue-in-cheek.

I can choose what do to about my sexuality. I can try to ignore it, get married, and such, but I would not be fulfilled at all. Being gay is not just about choosing to have sex with, it is also about who you are attracted to, who you can get close to, and who you want to be intimate with. Whether or not there is a specific genetic marker for this fabulous trait will be debated for a long time. The fact for me is that I knew long before puberty that I like boys in different ways than my friends did. And even though I was Catholic, I was never molested by my priest or anyone else. If it is a choice, then you should be able to choose to be gay and not straight, right? Could you? To me, the important part of this discussion is ‘even if it is a choice, why should we deny them their rights?’ Ones religious beliefs are obviously a choice, though usually determined by the family in which you were raised, but it is certainly not a genentic event. In the United States, however, your freedom to pursue that religious choice is one of the most ‘sacred’ protections of our Constitutional freedoms. Did you know that there are many religions out there that do marry gay people? Is it right to deny those churches their rights? Be sensible. Be inclusive.
