I went through a goth stage when I was a teenager, and believe me, my uber-Christian parents were not too thrilled about it. Just reassure your parents that the way you want to dress is not a reflection of your religious beliefs, and that you probably won't dress this way for the rest of your life, but this is how you want to dress right now. Maybe you can compromise and say you'll wear something less goth when you go out with them or to family events, and only dress that way when you go out with friends or go to school. Parents are usually cool with compromising, so see how that works out for you.

First, congrats on finishing your degree with honors! I think any investment in your education, especially a double MBA, will pay off in many ways including financially in the future. I think the issue you're having at work has more to do with being a young woman than a young African-American woman. I am similar in age and have been working in a professional environment in my field for four years, and have noticed that people often underestimate what young female professionals are capable of. Older employees, even more mature females in the office, seem to take joy in talking down to the under 30 set. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is just let it roll off your back and mantain your self confidence. Older coworkers are intimidated by young blood and men can be sexist in a competitive environment where their jobs and 'manhood' are at stake. In any event, don't be discouraged by coworkers who seem caustic or blatantly rude. Believe in yourself and your capabilities, and definitely pursue a higher degree! Best of luck...And know that one day you'll have that coveted corner office.

While the bible does say women are to be submit to their husbands, God does dictate that wives play a very important role in the Christian family role. Men are instructed to love and protect their wives, just as he loves the church. 'Submit' means something different to everyone, and for me as a Christian wife it means compromising on household decisions and respecting my husband. Obviously if he wanted to rob a bank, I wouldn't be too submissive on that subject.

I live in South Florida, where everyone speaks predominately Spanish. Tell me about it.

Heh, I'm one of those white faces in the grocery store living in a black neighborhood who gets dirty looks from everyone for no good reason other than I'm a different color. Believe me, I'm not giving people dirty looks back or walking around with an attitude...I'm buying milk and lunch meat just like everyone else. It hurts, because I've never done anything to people of different races. Hell, my step-family is African-American! I live in a predominately African-American neighborhood to be closer to my family and because my husband and I purchased the perfect starter home to begin our married life in. I don't know what to tell you other than we're all just people, we all bleed the same, and we're all God's children. It sucks that we live in a society where races still have friction.
