Ken LimMemberI’ve used the word all my life and have never run into any trouble. This particular incident probably has something to do with the tension of the situation and the ‘white male cop authority figure vs. innocent black bystanders’ syndrome.

Ken LimMemberThe vast majority of men don’t rape, probably greater than 99 percent. Sex, yes; rape, no. An unwilling partner is a total turnoff for most of us. Rapists are defective mentally, emotionally and perhaps genetically as well. Your second question is entirely different, with an incorrect assumption built in. Porn is simply fun, exciting entertainment for most viewers. Degradation and moral issues aside, which I happen to agree with, porn is no different than watching soap operas, WWF, bad TV sitcoms, teen movies, etc. I’s just fun, low-class, predictable entertainment based on a proven formula: voyeurism/insults/violence/embarassing situations.

Ken LimMemberFirst, I am amazed there are so few response to this question…I thoiught it would be the most popular seesion in the forum! My first brush came in first grade on the first day. During the morning recess a boy rushed past me, spit on my face, yelled ‘Ching-Chong Chinaman!’ and ran away. I was stunned. I had no idea what it meant, but I knew something very bad had just happened. Other the other end of the experience, in seventh grade I met my first black person who I inadvertently called ‘ boy’ a common word for me and others at the time. I had no idea there was any other meaning than opposite of girl. The kid was in my face so fast I was shocked. He had me up against the wall with his fist on my shirt collar saying ‘what did you just call me?!’ My utter bewilderment and confusion finally convinced him it was an innocent use of the term ‘boy.’ Sam and I ended up being friends and he taught me other words I wasn’t supposed to use. An elightening experience for us both!

Ken LimMemberI think its a fashion, trendy, PC thing. Pretty silly, too. Why homogenize yourself with a ‘Continent-Label’. There are so many countries, ethnicities, religions, cultures, tribes in Africa that African-American means absolutely nothing to me. Same goes for Asian-American. Why would a Mandinka or a Tutsi want to lump themselves in the same category as a Morrocan or Egyptian? Even more of a stretch – why would a Mandarin Chinese lump themselves in the same category as a Byelo-russian, a south Indian or Siberian? I don’t think even White Americans should be called that except there is no other name for them. Maybe USians?

Ken LimMemberI love fried chicken, and watermelon, too! And I’m not black. Until a few years ago, I never even knew there was any connection between these foods and blacks. Colonel Sanders and Popeye are both white last time I saw them. I read that article, too. It’s what introduced me to the Y? Forum. Fascinating. I don’t think Pitts was offended so much as bemused by the ‘idiocy’ of the grocer risking potential offensiveness. I don’t see how a good old American Southern food like fried chicken has anything to do with race/ethnicity/PC-ness at all. I don’t see what pasta (invented by my people, the Chinese, and introduced to Italy by Marco Polo) has to do with Italy. I don’t understand why a grocer needs to celebrate Black History Month. What the hell do groceries have to do with black history? OK, maybe peanuts and George Washington Carver? I thought the whole thing was mildly amusing, not for PC-ness, but for its incongruity.

Ken LimMemberRedskin is pretty borderline…its only a descriptor in my book, but that just my opinion. If someone called me yellowskin, it would not mean anything to me, but perhaps there are some bad connotations you have. I grew up in Tucson, AZ and had many ‘Indian’ friends as we called them back then. No one ever used the term redskin. I think calling somebody a redneck would be worse. Sorry if I’m being insensitive. My high school in Sunnyvale, CA sports team name was Indians for 50+ years and they were forced to change it a few years ago. Same thing happened to the esteemed Stanford University. I’m not sure I understand why. Sports teams choose thier names to honor, pay homage to and gain strength from the namesake. So why isn’t it good to have a team named after your ethnicity? Do Trojans & Spartans & Volunteers & Boilermakers mind?

Ken LimMemberWhat U say is true for ANY race men with Asian women. The previous response is absolutely correct. But I have a somewhat crude, somewhat accurate additional response…. Asian Female have a world-renowned mystique about them – everyone wants them. Asian Males? No one gives a hoot…stereotypes and connotations are all negative

Ken LimMemberSlavery has nothing to do with race. It is simply enslaving the captives/conquered people of a given war or battle. All thru Human history, slavery was one of the primary motives for war and engines of economic advancement. Virtually every major civilization became powerful on the backs of its conquered slaves. Slavery in it many forms [including serfs and indentured servants] was prevalent throught the entire world until just the last few centuries. The steam engine and all the marvelous machinery & inventions of Industrial Revolution lessened the need for slavery and changed the course of human history, which had previously been based in part or whole on slavery.

Ken LimMembergood question… But it can’t be just skin color because Colin Powell, Mariah Carey & Michael Jackson are all still ‘Black’ by most standards. And a lot of people don’t consider Indians [native Americans OR South Asians] whites, even though scientists mostly categorizes them as Caucasoid. an many Indians I know are far darker than many blacks I know. I think some Americans are pretty close-minded about what they consider ‘white’ …it really equates to Anglo/Northern European. ‘Olive-skin’ probably doesn’t count for some.

Ken LimMemberYour preface and your second question are more important…. ‘can anyone tell you once & for all?’ NO, only God can. No human being knows the truth. ‘Why should I believe you?’ You shouldn’t believe anyone who answers your main question, because whatever they answer, they will be wrong. Your main question presumes 4 things: that there is a heaven, that its a place you want to be, that there are guarantees and that all religious beliefs have a concept of heaven. My answer to those for points are: not likely, probably, no way and not all.

Ken LimMemberI think its pretty rare myself…I have never experienced this, seen it or committed it. However, I know it happens because I was taught racism by my parents. Not in any malicious or overt way at all. Just in a very matter of fact way. The only time it came up overtly was when us kids were all told that we would not get our inheritance and would be disowned if we ever married a black or white person. But what do you expect from a culture where the normal every day word for Caucasoid is ‘white ghost/devil’ and for Negroid is ‘black ghost/devil’? Its only because we Mongoloids are so small & ‘passive’ that there hasn’t been more trouble and violence. We were brought up to be afraid of you bigger, meaner people!
