Historically women have sought to improve themselves socially (=economically) by ‘marrying up’. Men improved themselves by their own efforts, and had no adversion to ‘marrying down’ for what they thought was love. Notwithstanding gender equality, most independent women will not share income or assets ‘for love’ as men are still expected to.
