Not all white women feel that black men are not ‘husband material’; where I live (California) there are many inter-ethnic marriages. However, many white women face tremendous family disapproval if they want to marry a black man. This doesn’t matter to some women, but many others would rather not upset their families.

Traditionally, in heterosexual relationships, the man is supposed to be the dominant partner in the relationship. If he was older/richer/taller, this reinforced the power balance. If the woman was older or had more money, how then could she look up to him? This is changing nowadays as women have more financial and social freedom. According to census figures, one-fourth of women now marry younger men, and among women over 30 marrying for the first time, it is more like one-third to almost one-half. Things are changing.

I too have found a lot of hostility and contempt toward religion among atheists. I am a pagan, and find that many atheists consider my beliefs ‘irrational’, ‘deluded’ and ‘superstitious.’ I think this stems from several sources: 1) Atheists throw the baby out with the bath water, seeing only the inhumane and cruel aspects of religion and forgetting the beneficial aspects. 2) Many atheists have grown up with very restrictive religious beliefs and think all religion is like this. 3) Most atheists are well-to-do, educated white people who think that religion is ‘low-brow’ and not for intelligent people.

I am a pagan, and I have encountered the same reaction from many atheists. I know a few who are salt-of-the-earth and wonderful, but the vast majority seem to me to have an incredibly rude, condescending attitude toward any kind of religious belief – not just Christianity. Just peruse the ‘Skeptical Inquirer’ or atheist web sites on the Net and notice the smug, superior attitude and arrogant manner. They seem to adore making fun of religion and spirituality. From my encounters with atheists, they justify this by saying that religious belief is ‘irrational’ and that atheists are more intelligent and have superior reasoning abilities. Most atheists are affluent Anglo people, and I think there is a certain elitism involved.

In addition to counseling, you might want to get yourself to a doctor for a complete physical. You may have an endocrine or hormonal disorder, or clinical depression. Consider a visit to an acupuncturist and/or ayurvedic practitioner as well; they can often help what Western medicine is inadequate to address.

To my mind, there is a lot more evidence for the existence of God than there is for the existence of Julius Caesar. I think if you are open to and accepting of God (under whichever name you call him) you will find evidence of a Deity; if you only search out evidence for the non-existence of Deity that is what you will find. Atheism, for what it’s worth, seems to be a belief exclusively held by the white middle and upper class. I think it is really impossible for science to either prove or disprove the existence of God, despite the best efforts of many in the field.

Please don’t judge all of California by Southern California. People go to Los Angeles to ‘make it big’ in show business, so consequently you are dealing with cutthroat ambition and inflated egos. I am from Northern California and also find that a lot (by no means all) of Southern Californians are superficial, rude and hell-bent on being ‘superstars.’ If you want to see a better side of California, come to Oakland instead! I can attest to the fact that we are a much nicer, happier breed up here. We do hate to be painted with the same brush as the people in the southern part of the state, though!

You could call me one of the lucky ones; I study history, know my geography and have had Turkish co-workers in the past. Therefore I know that Turkey is a modern European country, not under religious rule, part of the Middle East or full of warlike “Barbarians.” Chalk up the stereotypes to geographic ignorance, people who assume that any Muslim country is part of the Middle East, lurid romance novels of “harem life” and Turkish pirates, the movie Midnight Express and European history books that portray Christians as “good” and Muslims and Turks as “the enemy” because Turkey and various European countries were at war for many years.

Another possible reason for so many overweight people among the poor: It is a well-documented fact that overweight women “marry down.” Overweight women and low-income men are at the bottom of their respective marriage markets, so they get left with each other. Overweight people also work in lower-paying jobs and get paid less than thin people – again, this is well documented. For reference, there are many sources, but I would recommend a book called Losing It by Laura Fraser, about America’s diet industry.

Contrary to popular belief, there were actually more never-married women in the ‘good old days’. One in three women in the 19th century never married. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, over one-third of upper-class women never married. I think the perception that we are awash in a glut of ‘old maids’ comes from the fact that women these days are marrying later than ever before. Also, the demise of traditional sex roles has indeed ‘taken the romance out’ of dating but it has replaced it with something much more equal and grounded in the real world.

Growing up in a mostly white, middle-class suburb, I recall lawn care being part of basic home maintenance. An unkempt lawn was considered to “lower the tone” of the neighborhood, and often the owner of the lawn would hear from the neighbors about it.

I come from a position very similar to yours: I too am well-read, articulate, aware and haven’t completed my bachelor’s degree. I would say that yes, definitely, there is that assumption. If you are smart and like to read, you have ipso facto completed at least four years of college; on the other hand, if you do not have a degree, you are only fit for reading True Confessions magazine and watching Jenny Jones. There are many people out there who are smart and have no degree, and conversely there are many degreed people who are thick as a plank. Intellect and education do not necessarily go together.

This assumption springs from a combination of ignorance, racism, and a very cynical view of marriage in general. If a woman of color marries a white man, it’s because she wants to ‘marry up’. If a man of color marries a white woman, it’s because he wants a trophy. God forbid loving, spiritual reasons should have anything to do with the choice of partner. These kind of people assume all marriages take place for some kind of material gain and also assume all people of color are poor.

In my experience, white women are actually less uncomfortable in racially awkward situations than white men. White women I have known, myself included, have happily studied other cultures – Native American, Polynesian and Egyptian/African, especially. Note that these cultures all have traditions of strong, capable women. I think the extreme male-dominance of many Asian cultures turns women off to studying them. There is not much in samurai stories that appeals to most women (there must be exceptions). Women in general prefer to see themselves depicted in a positive light, and that influences what they want to study. I have known white women who study Eastern spirituality (Tibetan Buddhism and Siddha yoga) but none who enjoy samurai stories.

As a Pagan, I regretfully have to say “No, not in this lifetime.” Where I live (San Francisco Bay Area), Pagans are very common. In most of the rest of the country, Christianity is the dominant religion (about 80 percent of the population) and many are very conservative. Sadly, it seems remote that a Jew could be elected President (and Judaism is a mainstream religion). There is still too much narrow-mindedness for that. I think this country could use a Pagan president.
