BenParticipantMy thought is that it’s mostly a cultural thing. If you take any child and raise him or her in a certain envornment, he or she is likely to behave in a similar manner to those around him, regardless of the color of their skin.

BenParticipantI’m neither christian nor any other religion, but I believe that in the parable of the graden of Eden, that Adam and Eve had many children, and that Kane and Able were just the first.

BenParticipantI think that most current residents of the US call the United States ‘America’ because thats how its been done for a long, long time. I know that its a very simple answer, but its the truth.

BenParticipantAs with most things, it depends on the situation. I think the calls of reverse discrimination are most common in areas where the white candidates far outnumber the minority ones. Say, for example, you work in an office where nine employees are white and one is black. If all of them do an apparently equal job and the black employee is promoted, the white ones may feel he got the job ‘because he is black,’ and the company either ‘wants to be more diverse’ or feels that it will be looked down upon if it doesn’t have minorities in higher-level positions. The loss of jobs by white men is also hard to swallow for some. As an educated young white man, I would have been assured of a good career and a likely successful life 50 years ago. Today, with women and minorites competing for the same jobs, my chances of success are less than half of what they would have been then. Is that fair? Yes. But it’s not always easy to enjoy when you’re now the one on the short end of the stick.

BenParticipantAs a young man with bad acne, I can interject something into the conversation. Does acne matter to girls and women? You bet it does – a lot. For a long time, even though I was in very good shape and rather well-built at 5’11” and 185 lbs, I was ignored by women. I know it wasn’t my personality, as I had a number of female friends who liked me a lot, but bad acne is something that’s nearly impossible to overcome. I’d been seeing a dermatoligist for years and tried dozens of treatments with little to no success, including the strongest one on the market, Acutane. Fortunately for me, the Internet exists. I met a girl online, and we talked for nearly a year before meeting in person. She fell in love with my personality enough that she didn’t mind my looks when we met in person. We’ve now been together nearly two years and are very happy. I feel incredibly lucky, as I’m not sure I would have met anyone another way. My advice to other guys in a similar situation is keep up hope; I’ve been there and know how it is.

BenParticipantI face the same situation in the office supply store I work in. We get returns on all types of items, but typically the only people who return computer books are Indian or Pakastani. I’ve had the same thoughts as you: do they read the whole book and then want their money back, or do they just go to the section that they need and not need it anymore? Either way, it’s in bad taste, as we don’t rent books.

BenParticipantI agree with your statement that the black guy/white girl couple is much more common than the white guy/black girl one. Why is this the case? I’m not exactly sure, but I’m sure there are many reasons. One thing I can say is that, in my experience, when I see a couple in which the girl is white and the guy is black, the guy can run the whole gammut from being the stereotypical big jock who wears Fubu type clothes, to the well-dressed professional, and the guy may be very handsome, or quite the opposite. However, most of the time when I see a couple where the guy is white and the girl is black, the girl is almost always very attractive, and usually very intelligent, well-spoken and well-dressed.
Do white guys only date the ‘best’ black girls? I don’t know, but it seems common. As for my opinion of black women (as a white guy): while I tend to prefer white girls over other races, there are plenty of attractive women of all ethnicities. I like a girl who is ‘thick but firm’ and who has rounded facial features, big eyes and full lips. I also like a girl who isn’t affraid to speak her mind and be assertive. So do I tend to find some black women attractive? You bet. I’m currently in a very happy two-year relationship with a white girl of Italian descent, but if we ever were to split up, I’d consider a black girl in a relationship the same as I would anyone else.

BenParticipantIt’s something I’ve wondered about for a long time myself, and I’ve never been able to get a straight answer – even from my mom or sister. I always just get, ‘Oh I just want to be blond.’ I feel that unless you’re coloring your hair in order to take gray out, almost all women look best with their natural color. Your natural hair color just matches your skin and eyes best.

BenParticipantBeing born and raised in West Virginia, I guess I know a bit about what it’s like to be an ‘Appalachian,’ but it’s really not all that different from most other areas of the country. The biggest difference would simply have to be in the fact that the area has a very large number of poor white people, moreso than anywhere else in the United States. In fact, West Virginia has a higher percentage of poor white people than any other state. This may be partly due to the fact that the area has very few minorities (the state is about 97 percent white), and unfortunately, there are almost always going to be poor people in every area. Whereas minority people bear the brunt of this in many areas, they simply aren’t here in great enough numbers to suffer the same fate. Other than that, the economy is depressed, being based for the most part over the last 150 years on coal and steel, both of which are suffering. As far as religion, people are mostly Christian, from varying sects. Catholicism is a large denomination in my area.
