What is it with white bleach blondes?

I fully understand the whole cult of blondeness in this country (as dumb as it may be), but please tell me: Why do I see so many white women ruining their natural hair color with so much bleach? There are numerous dark-haired celebrities who are considered attractive (Angie Harmon, Gena Gershon, etc.), so I thought that idea had passed. Why do so many white women take it to such an extreme (i.e. - pale/platinum)? Do they not care about making it look natural? People can do as they choose, but I see many attractive brunette white women and don't get this. Another thing: are such women aware of how this garish hair color makes them appear? It's associated with strippers and porn stars.

I agree. I will admit that while in college, I lightened my hair because my formerly naturally blond hair was turning brown. When I look at pictures from that period, I am appalled (although I always took great pains to make sure my roots didn't show). I think some people don't understand the meaning of 'tacky' - and that includes women who grow abnormally long fingernails and airbrush them, women who show their midriffs (or rear ends in minutely short shorts) when they have no business doing so. Maybe it will cease when people find ways to tactfully tell their friends that they look cheap!

It's something I've wondered about for a long time myself, and I've never been able to get a straight answer - even from my mom or sister. I always just get, 'Oh I just want to be blond.' I feel that unless you're coloring your hair in order to take gray out, almost all women look best with their natural color. Your natural hair color just matches your skin and eyes best.

I noticed when I went from sixth to seventh grade that the girls with mousy brown hair were all gone, replaced with blondes. I suppose its the never ending quest to improve ones looks. Why else would black women have extensions which to me look like colored rope? I work with two black women who change their hair on a weekly basis, and rarely does it actually imiprove their looks, yet they continue whith new colors, new weaves, new wigs, etc.. Maybe it's a woman thing rather than a racial thing

As you pointed out, some people associate bleached blond hair with strippers and porn stars. While girls are probably not bleaching their hair because they want to be thought of as strippers, many of them think that association lends them a bit of sexiness - to be thought of as sexy without actually stripping, in a way.

Why are you concerned with what a white woman does to her hair? Do blondes frighten you? Do you think that us coloring our hair is as crazy as black females buying European white hair and gluing it into their scalps? Do you think that anyone believes that you grow that silky long hair from your scalps?

It sounds to me like you are intimidated by blonde women in our society. Of course many brunette women are attractive. However, many people are not content with their natural color, so they turn blonde. Many feel more youthful and also more self-confident. Yes, in some cases bleach-blonde women do look 'trashy.' However they do not look any worse than a 'trashy' brunette women. Oh yeah- I think saying Blondes are associated with pornstars and strippers, is a very big generalization.

Why did you go on the attack when you saw her question? Do black people who are curious frighten you? Did you manage, somehow, to miss the entire point of this website?

I know this may be hard for you to believe, but white women are not the only women in the world who can grow long, straight hair! A lot of African-American women grow their hair long NATURALLY (not always weave!!). The straightness may very well be due to a perm in a large number of cases, but not necessarily all. If she has Native American or white ancestry in her recent past generations, then her hair may very well be straight without the aid of a perm. Secondly, I think ANYONE, black or white, looks ridiculous with bleached blonde hair. She's not dogging blonde women, she's questioning the attractiveness of BLEACHED blond hair.

I color (not bleach) my hair ultra light blond for several reasons. First, my mother (who passed away 15 years ago) was naturally white blond and was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen and having the same color hair as her gives me a connection with her (since I look a lot like my dad). Second, coloring gives my hair an even color, which I had always wanted as I was growing up. Third, I was blond as a child and always liked that look. Fourth, I like the way it makes me look. I'm 34 years old and still get whistles from men. I think the hair has something to do with it. As far as trying to look like a stripper or porn star, the movies I've watched have a majority of women who are brunettes. I've been coloring my hair for seven years and most people assume it is my natural color and are very surprised when they find out it's not. But you've got to do what feels right for you.

actually white women DO NOT grow silky hair, ASIAN WOMEN have and grow the most beautiful, silkiest hair know to mankind, and unfortunately black women are making these korean stores rich by buying asian females hair, black women CAN GROW LONG HEALTHY HAIR (just look at most young black females during their childhood years) but due to perming, weaving, and applying all those other chemicals in their hair over a period of years it damages and slows the growimg process. I wish black women would just do away with perms and weaves and be proud of out god given natural hair.

The real question may not be, 'Why do white girls want to be blonde?' The answer to that is easy; most of us would agree that we think it would lend us a kind of fantasy sexiness, if we had the guts to go all the way. A more provacative question is this: Why do we think it's sexy? -- or more correctly -- Why do the men that we're trying to impress give us the overwhelming impression that THEY think it's sexy? Rationally, really blonde hair is usually only found on young (really young) kids. The possible correlation there is rather disturbing, don't you think.

I have been trying to figure this out also. I do know that it is much more common in some parts of the country than others. It is almost an epidemic in the Midwest (excluding Chicago). Just take a look at the local TV anchorwomen to get an idea what your locale values. It all boils down to this----these people want to have blonde hair and they think they look better when they bleach it. To us natural blondes it looks particularly bad.

'The cult of blondeness' seems equally spread throughout the world, and I'm afraid it is not reserved for the United States only. Numerous blondes walking around the town of Zagreb, where I live (and trillions of jokes connected with them), prove this theory.

Yet I don't fully understand why you bother yourself with this 'phenomenon,' as I don't see any reason to worry about it. My best friend happens to be a 'non-natural' blonde, and it fits her. She looks really pretty, although I'd never change my natural brown color in such a drastic way. My point is that the choice of a hair color should be and is an individual thing. If the color blonde is making somebody happier about her or his appearence, making this person feel more self-confident or more 'desirable,' why should we make an issue of it?

First off, not all black women have hair weaves. Many of us are proud of our natural hair, and I believe you will find a majority of black women wear their natural hair. Secondly, the person who asked this question was just curious as to why blond is such a perferable hair color among white women. Most of the time it looks awful. We are not scared of blondes, we just want you to know you look bad.
