When I was growing up, there was an unspoken understanding in my family that we children did not swear at our parents. And now, in early adulthood, I would still never dream of it, nor would my friends (most of whom are white). I regard it as more of an uneducated or lower-class thing. I also cannot believe that no black people let their children use profanity toward them.

This smacks of a knee-jerk reaction.Presumably, if you are a straight female, you won’t have had sex with too many women and are therefore not in a position to corroborate or deny the assertion. Something seeming like an offensive generalisation does not prevent its being true.

I often find myself attracted to blokes with receding hairlines. It can look sexy, but only with very short hair. I find long hair on the rest of a balding head a turn-off. However, I have always cared more about nice eyes or a sexy smile (not to mention a good personality) than the number of hair follicles on someone’s head.

in reply to: Why does gay affection bother straights? #26200

I have had this discussion with my father many a time. He feels that by showing affection in public, gays and lesbians are flaunting their sexuality. I counter by saying it is a natural part of any relationship. Unfortunately, many straight people seem to feel that while they don’t mind people being gay, they don’t want to have to acknowledge it, which seems to me to be just as prejudiced. I live in the middle of London, but even so, very rarely do I see any public displays of affection between gay people, and gay-friendly as I am, it still causes me to do a slight double-take when I do see it, simply because it is so rare. Unfortunately, until more gay people feel able to express affection in public (which is unlikely, due to the volume of prejudice), it will not be regarded as commonplace, which in turn will discourage gay people from doing so. It’s a vicious circle. Be aware though, that plenty of straights really aren’t bothered by gay PDAs.

I am white and always use a scrunchy – it’s easier to distribute the shower gel. I must say, though, that while many things can be attributed to race, many more come down to the individual preference, nothing more than that. You do seem slightly over-keen to look to race as the reason for our differences!

Men do it, too; it just sounds worse when we do it because our voices are shriller. Anyway, women talk more than men anyway, so it follows that we would nag more.

I don’t go through life thinking ‘how wonderful it is to be white’ but it has sometimes occurred to me that I am lucky to avoid the prejudice that is often associated with being non-white. That makes me happy, but then I think that I shouldn’t need to feel happy/lucky for taking for granted people not abusing me. I suppose everyone wants an easy life-yeah, i’m happy for having that. However, people are rude to white people too-there are plenty of jerks out there, and sometimes I get tired of thinking I have to be extra-nice to minorities when I get annoyed just because it is likely they will think I am annoyed with them for their race rather than simply their personality/actions.
