    I remember reading something recently about how people tend to be more sensitive to the scent of people from other races/ethnicities...something about it being an old survival instinct that allowed us to differentiate between people who were familiar and people who were 'intruders' and may have been a threat. I don't know how much evidence there is to back up this therory, and now I'm just wishing I knew where I had read about it.

    I think it's a cultural thing. My mom's side of the family is Italian, and we are louder than hell when we're together. My paternal grandfather was also Italian, and most of my memories of him involve him speaking VERY loudly. Both Italian and African-American cultures tend to be passionate, and I think that passion carries over into communication styles as well.
