AmyParticipantI am an American and find nothing wrong with being American, but I find a lot wrong with the way society works here. The United States is a superpower, yes, but that does not give it the right to think it is the best country in the world. It is not the fault of the ordinary citizens, because people are undereducated in social studies. I am interested in geography and other cultures, but everything I have learned about them was not taught in school. I think the average student, at least where I live, could not locate Canada on the map, nor name the seven continents. It is true that the United States is technologically advanced, but most technology did not originate here. And a military power it is, but not invincible. I think this hatred from other countries comes from America as a whole forcing its ideals upon them. It is not our fault that we think the American way is the best way; we have been taught the American dream since we were young. Also, countries feel like Americans are ignorant of what goes on in the world. While this is not our fault, it is probably true. I think mostly it comes from the United States thinking it’s an invincible superpower and the only superpower there is. However, we should keep in mind that looking back on history, every country that was a superpower wasn’t one forever.

AmyParticipantWhen I was a child, I lived in Germany for eight years among other American military families. I noticed that the American children did not want to associate with the German children because they thought they were ‘dirty’ and that they ‘stunk.’ Talking to my mother I found that the same was true among the adults. I thought it was wrong to have such stereotypical views of people. Therefore, I think Americans are a lot more obsessed with cleanliness than a lot of other cultures. As for being militaristic and neat, I don’t know.

AmyParticipantD.C. is only one city on the East Coast. Obviously everybody cannot be this way, because the majority of people cannot afford to. You say that we all attend private schools, but there are a lot more public schools than private schools, and a lot more people in them. I have been to Europe, but that is because my family was military. We could not have afforded it any other way. How can you say we look down on people who aren’t wealthy when the majority of Easterners and Americans, and people all over the world, are not wealthy? If you say we are preoccupied with money, maybe it is because a lot of us barely have enough to live on (fortunately, I am one of the luckier people who don’t have this problem). If you think the entire East Coast is this way, maybe you ought to think about where you are. D.C. is the place where politicians and other government workers live. If politicians are obsessed with wealth and status and high education, maybe it is because they need it to achieve success in their field. And no matter who is running this country, remember that they cannot be elected if normal, everyday people don’t elect them. The amount of representatives you have depends on the population of your state, and I do believe the state that is farthest west on the mainland has more votes than any other state in the country.

AmyParticipantWhile other countries know a lot about the United States, Americans don’t know much about other countries. I am interested in all other countries, but if I hadn’t studied on my own, I couldn’t have learned anything. It is because in the lower grades children are uneducated in the area of social studies. It’s the scientific age. Science is stressed more than any other subject. But it’s not just true for not knowing about Canada. A lot of people my age couldn’t even name the 50 states of our own country.

AmyParticipantThe real reason I’m responding is because of what you said about the South having a higher concentration of ‘lower-income and uneducated people.’ There are high concentrations of low-income people in every state. And just because you are low income does not mean you are uneducated. The last time I checked, public schools were free. You don’t have to have a high income to have an education. In response to your question, in the northeastern areas of the country, there are more large cities. Obviously if you live in large city, you cannot leave your dog outside. Also, it would probably be too cold for an animal to be outside during the winter. However, in the South there are a lot of rural areas where dogs have plenty of room to run around, and they do not have to be taken in, other than during the coldest parts of the winter.

AmyParticipantThe Americans had just defeated the English in the American Revolution when the forefathers came up with this amendment. This was to ensure that the government and government workers weren’t the only ones who had guns, so that the common people were not forced to do everything the government said by fear of being shot. And when you have given a society a right for so long, you cannot just take it away. Also, I have heard (and my grandfather was Canadian), that Canada is less of a violent place than America. Drugs are illegal here, but that does not stop people from buying them, the same would be with firearms. If you are not a criminal then you are not going to cause anybody intentional harm with a firearm, but if you are a criminal then what would stop you from buying an illegal firearm and using it in a malevolent way. The only difference is that the innocent people will have no way to protect themselves.

AmyParticipantI think it has to do with how much you are used to. When I was younger I lived in Germany where it can get quite cold during the winter. Now I have lived in southeast Georgia for seven years, and I get cold when it’s below 85. I’m happy when it’s 95 degrees, whereas my New England relatives about die when it’s over 85. When I go to visit them I have to wear jackets at night, even during the summer, but they wear shorts and t-shirts like I would wear during the summer in Georgia. I’ve never been to Denver, but I imagine it has to do with what you are used to.

AmyParticipantI am a white person who lives in the South, although being from a military family I have moved around quite a bit. Living in the South, there are about an equal amount of blacks and whites in my area. I think that if you feel like ‘most’ white people feel this way, it might be just where you live. I live in a region that people tend to think of as being a rascist area where the Klu Klux Klan meets and all that, and I am sure that there are White Supremecists in the world, but I have never actually met one in my whole entire life and I have met a lot of people. Also, to the contrary I think that a lot of white people feel not superior, but inferior to black people because of the past.

AmyParticipantSometimes it is because we don’t want to hurt your feelings. People say they like to be told the truth to, but I don’t think that’s true. Telling somebody that you’re busy and telling them that you don’t like them because they’re ugly and they smell like a sweaty pig will result in the same thing, the relationship will probably end, but one will be easier to deal with and a lot less hurtful. Also, sometimes we don’t know exactly why we want to end the relationship, so we have to come up with some reason.

AmyParticipantFor me, I do not feel at all that way, and that is partially because I know in big pageants a lot of women have done things to themselves to make them look better. I do not feel bad for not looking like them, because I know I probably could if I got plastic surgery.

AmyParticipantIn my opinion, it has a lot to do with where you live. I go to a school in a small town. There we always dress neat. I have never ever seen anybody go to school wearing sweats or even ripped jeans. I think it’s a regional thing. Also it has to do with the size of your school. If you go to a larger school then you can be more comfortable setting trends, because there are all kinds of different people, but when you go to a school where you have known everybody all your life (by the way, I’ve only went to school with the people there since the 7th grade), then you are less comfortable with trying to be different.

AmyParticipantSo that you don’t misunderstand my message, I would first like to say that I am a 17 year old virgin, and intend to be one until I’m married. First of all, what is the age 18? Eighteen is the age that American government picked for the age you become an adult. But who can really say when you are an adult. Females have the ability to bear children around the age of twelve. If they weren’t meant to have children and be sexually active at that age, then they wouldn’t be able to. In a lot people’s (at least Americans) opinion it is wrong to have sex when you are ‘underage’, but I don’t think that to God and nature it is. So it depends on whose opinion you care about.
