That was a really rude thing to say. I am in professional school and know many very articulate black people! Calling black people articulate has become such a sensitive point that I feel somewhat intimidated by calling *any* black person articulate. But can I call white people articulate but not black people? Surely Barack Obama is articulate by anyone’s standards! I’ve been told quite a few times that I’m very _____ for a ________. (Fill in with any descriptors) It sucks, but it does happen to everyone once in a while. I guess it’s the classic back-handed compliment. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

I’ve seen this on the street and figured it was a combination of language and them trying to lie low due to immigration issues. The Mexicans I’ve known personally have been warm and friendly almost to a fault! Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

In my experience (and I have lived in a largely black urban area for many years) simply saying “thank you” “how ya’ doin” or smiling achieves the goal of treating the man like a human being while maintaining one’s own safety. The important caveat is to keep moving- if you slow down, that can be taken as a sign of interest! Also, as simple as it seems, how you wear your hair can make a big difference. I’ve noticed that long flowing hair attracts a lot of attention. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

First of all, I’d be careful about basing my beliefs on anecdotal evidence. Those are, what, six or eight cases out of all the muggings that happen in the U.S. every year? There were probably other things those criminals had in common, such as drug use, poverty, bad families, etc… Second, I am a white female and lived in a predominantly black neighborhood in an economically marginal area for years and no one touched a hair on my head. On the contrary, I would walk down the street and people would greet me in a friendly way that I haven’t seen in white communities in many years. The older people in particular were very warm and kind. I believe a major factor in triggering muggings such as you describe is *economic disparity.* If you look like you have money, you are more likely to be

I have rarely seen anyone do this, and haven’t noticed their ethnicity. I usually wash my hands thoroughly, then use a paper towel to turn off the sink, then use a paper towel to open the door. It annoys me when public restrooms either don’t have paper towels or place the trash can far from the door. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

Black/white are not as clear cut biologically as gender is. Perhaps you need to look at what you think is holding you back: is it appearance? Many black people look white and vice versa. If this is a real question you should think about some counseling. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

“Taken over?” Giving people an option on a phone line means being taken over? It is really hard and takes time to learn a new language. I’m sure there are plenty of Americans living in France who know only enough to get by, and the level of language that allows one to buy groceries just doesn’t cut it when trying to solve a problem over the phone. Since there are so many of these Americans (and British, and Indians and others) most educated French people speak a fair amount of English. In addition, the language(s) spoken in a country are not determined in advance by some higher authority (except perhaps in rare cases like Israel). A language becomes dominant by convention, and in the U.S. the convention throughout most of history has been to use English. This is due to the fact th

I think the question is, why do people like to open Chinese take-out places in black neighborhoods? I haven’t noticed black people liking Chinese food any more than white people or Asian people but we all eat what’s available! Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

Potty training too early is not good for anyone concerned. If the kid’s nervous system is ready it will be fast and easy; if not, it’s likely to be traumatic in ways that may take years to reveal themselves. It is not so much a matter of synapses as someone mentioned, but of myelination. Without proper myelination the child does not have the control to truly control himself. (If you want to see someone without myelin, look at a person with MS) Regarding dependency, many white people (including myself) believe that children need a stage in which they feel very secure in having their needs met before they start to express their independence and challenge themselves at their own pace. This is backed up by both psychological studies and cross-cultural research. Be Kind, for everyone

It is a gesture of courtesy. It may not be faster, but we are acknowledging the fact that you have stopped for us. By the way, if a driver is being rude (turning into the crosswalk I am walking in, blocking the sidewalk etc.) I will absolutely not trot! Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

It’s funny, because I’ve been annoyed by this, but I’ve increasingly noticed among Chinese people as well. Regarding making it racial when it’s not: where I live it *is* black people more than white people- however it is generally working-class African-Americans: not professional African-Americans, not Africans. I see many black people every day and it breaks down clearly this way by class and ethnicity. Black people as a whole seem to take the hit for the behavior of the socioeconomically challenged. As someone else pointed out, teenagers of all backgrounds are loud; I have to admit I was like that for a few years when I was trying to show that I didn’t care what anyone thought. You really do need to wear sun block as well. Anyone, no matter how dark, can get a sunburn or skin cancer. You have some protection, and you can be thankful for that as well as the fact that you are not “pale.” Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

I think the issues of age and class are very important here as well. I find that African-Americans who are young and/or poor are likely to cop an attitude. Kim H. mentions personal space. I find this ironic because in my experience black people (of a certain class) do not seem to acknowledge personal space at all: walking directly in front of me, disregarding the convention of walking on the right, spreading out across a sidewalk or aisle with no regard for others who may be in a hurry, and generally being loud. In addition, I’ve noticed that often (usually on the bus) black people tend to say “excuse me” *while* pushing their way through rather than saying “excuse me” and waiting for me to move. At times I have had health problems and couldn’t move very well and was very painfully pu

Generally speaking, there are enough differences that they need to be taken into consideration when prescribing medication or choosing treatment plans. *But* there are no absolute differences: not even skin color or skull shape. In a true biological sense there is no such thing as race. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato
